Thanks to everyone who responded to my questions about Huckabee. I keep hearing how the evangelicals are supporting him, and it kind of annoys me to think people would expect me to support him just because he's a former pastor.

Jim,

I guess because I used to read so much science fiction and fantasy, all I can think of to add to your scenario is more fantasy than anything. I can easily imagine a Muslim touching the Ark of the Covenant and there being an explosion that kills everyone within a certain distance and reduces everything to rubble within that same distance. People become believers, and the Israelis are able to build the temple where the destroyed Mosque is. :-)

I have thicker skin than that. please don't worry no offense taken and you were right so there.

How do I go about getting a picture. I don't know whether to use a picture of my deceased cat or one of my two living dogs. I could choose something completely offbeat too you never know.

it has a nice feel to it though I don't know that fantasy is quite the right description. great addition!

Sorry Mac - I have to rescind on that "Now that is original" comment.

Campsmore, what does messianic mean. I don't mean to sound stupid but, is he Jewish? I guess I mean, what does it mean to be "messianic"? Thanks!

Hi GT,
It is my understanding that they are Jews who believe Jesus is the Messiah. I believe Joel claims to be this.

Am I right everyone?

Alesia said...

GT,
They are Jewish but believe Jesus was our savior. They adhere to Jewish laws & practices.

On second thought, I don't think Joel does claim to be this.

Thanks mac and alesia for the answers on "messianic". I was trying to understand about "mc" and why he is so hateful sounding to christians. I thought if I understood what camps meant by messianic I could understand his view. I do know what a messianic Jew is but thought that "being messianic" was something different. Hope this is not too confusing, I just cannot understand his hateful attitude.

Also, I understand dispensationalism and a good amount about covenant beliefs. It is my understanding that there are many variations of both and some teach a blending of both. Also, it would be a conflict to believe classic dispensationalism and be anything but pretrib because of the belief of jews and the church being separate with different "God ordained" roles in history. Thanks for the help!!

God Bless!!

Angie, Shalom! I don't think there would be an explosion if a Muslim touched the ark. The person would just up and die. There's also no need for the Dome of the Rock to be destroyed. The rock inside the dome is too wrinkled to be a threshing-floor, so that cannot be the location of the Holy of Holies. There are two different locations that better match the "threshing floor"; both would place the Dome of the Rock in what had been the Court of the Gentiles.

I imagine it would go something like this:

While digging a trench, a wall is encountered. The supervisors determine that it is a sealed entryway, covered with imaginary Hebrew writing (since the Temple never existed, the writing doesn't exist either), and someone with a sledge hammer breaks into the chamber. The first thing the workers see when they shine a flashlight into the chamber is gold.

The workers quickly enlarge the hole, and the supervisor's supervisor is called. As the dust from the sledgehammers dies down and lights are brought in it quickly becomes apparent that this thing is worth a lot of money. The supervisors call for the Boss of Bosses to come as quickly as possible. The workers are ordered to stop taking pictures with their cellphones and some cellphones are even confiscated, but not all, and some photos get emailed to friends and family. This creates an even greater sense of urgency: if it's solid gold, they'll need time to melt it down; if it's gold leaf it will need to be scraped off; then the box itself will need to be broken up, or maybe not -- without the gold it's just another Jewish box that will fetch a few shekels on the antiquities black market. While the bosses are arguing about what to do, one of the workers is ordered to find out if it's solid gold or gold leaf. The worker touches the ark, there is a spark, and the worker dies.

In the confusion, a few more cellphone pictures are snapped. Some mild panic ensues until they can determine that there are no live electrical wires anywhere in the chamber. The body is removed and taken to the morgue; the people going with the body are ordered to explain that the worker touched a live electrical wire by accident during digging -- a terrible shame. One of the supervisors goes to look at the spot where the worker touched the ark, lays his hand on another part of the ark to steady himself, and also dies. This time, someone had their cellphone camera running in video mode and catches it all. Word spreads about this unholy piece of Jewish magic -- is the object guarded by djinns? The Bosses want this thing taken care of as quickly and quietly as possible. They order four men to take it out of the chamber to a secure location. The orders are enforced by guards with guns, so four men climb into the chamber, grab ahold of the ark, and are instantly killed.

The death toll has risen to 6 in just a half an hour. What was to be a quick session of plunder has turned very, very serious very, very quickly. By now, through friends of friends, the first photos of the ark start appearing on the cellphones of members of the Jewish antiquities board. The members recognize the ark for what it is and try to get more information from the Muslim, who deny everything. However, they come to change their tune as more and more archaeologists and rabbis start calling, and as the body count keeps rising. As the archaeologists and rabbis arrive, the remaining workers evaporate, mindful of their dead co-workers and not wanting to be caught up in some Jewish magick. The ark is moved by Jews to the Temple Institute, and the word spreads.

Ok, on your right I introduce you all to Frankie, my beloved Frankfurter Sausage Dog (Dachshund). We are joined at the hip. My other beloved, Charlie, will get his picture published soon enough.

I read today in a free local newspaper the following sayings by children about what love is:

1. When my grandmother got arthritis, she could not bend over and paint her toenails any more. So my grandfather does it for her, even when his hands have arthritis too. That is love.
2. Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs.
3. Love is when mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK.
4. Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well.
5. Love is when mommy gives daddy the best piece of chicken.
6. Love is when mommy sees daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is more handsome than Robert Redford.
7. Love is what makes you smile when you are tired.

The practicality of love as explained by Children.

Beddy-bye time for me. God bless all. May you wake up every morning with your first thought on our precious Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. What a way to start the day!

Hi Everyone!

Well, I didn't read the posts at Joel's before I commented but I felt such a burden to post about Balaam's attempt to curse Israel and how his DONKEY stopped him. So, I had some material on hand and posted it but I left out the Donkey part, so I had to redo it. Then I went back and read the comments and then I saw MC's bait and thought OH, No! But, God knows what he is doing and even if I don't, I will always follow the prompting of the Holy Spirit. We have asked him to protect and turn the blog around for His glory. He knows who and what this character is and knows how to handle him. Now MC only gets two God given warnings.

I keep myself he is not anyone other than, but he sure has all of the ear marks of the other.

GRUMPY AND EVERYONE: clicking on the orange B logo for blogger, while on the posting page (with the comment box) will shrink the comment, similar to the clicking of the anonymous name on the old blog. The best way to defuse him is ignore him and click him off the page. That way he can't infect anyone. He is so full of hate it isn't even funny and seems to be verging on manic tendencies. Poor person.

I don't read the MC comments. But I think Lori had a good idea about posting scripture. If there are any "lukewarm" or "backslidden" (is that a word?) Christians or anyone wondering about whether or not to make a commitment, what better thing to do than post scripture?

One of big reasons I decided to become a Christian was because I met my friend Pete who had the peace I had been looking for all my life. Of course, the Holy Spirit did the hard part, but it was the peace Pete had that caught my attention. As long as we respond to the MCs and Ts on Joel's in a hot-headed and/or fleshly way, it's going to be hard for someone who is like I was six years ago to see any reason to want to learn more about becoming a Christian. And maybe if we post scripture in addition to our discussions, the difference between us and MC will be clear.

Shalom, all! I've been with my daughters all day, so I missed most of the fun. It was hard not to respond to MC because the answer is so simple and non-offensive (at least to me). There are two reasons: originally, the Christian movement was an offshoot of Judaism. Since there were no female rabbis, there were no female apostles. Perhaps, more importantly, the pagans DID have female priests. To have had a female apostle would have marked early Christianity as more pagan than Jewish.

Grany, I am so happy to hear about your swimming the Tiber! I always knew you had it in you!

Angie said...

Curiosity got the best of me, and I went back to Joel's and looked at the MC post that was apparently meant to provike women.

My reaction? Who cares why Jesus didn't appoint female apostles! When our Father looks at me, he doesn't think any less of me because I'm a woman and not a man.

I'm starting to get tired of our culture's obsession over differences, and I'm sick to death of the victim mentality. Things don't go the way you want? All you have to do is say, "I'm a victim because I'm a (fill in the blank)."

One of my many favorite verses is 1 Timothy 2:10:

For women who claim to be devoted to God should make themselves attractive by the good things they do. (NLT)

Living for myself doesn't "put a smile" on my Father's face and isn't storing up any treasure in heaven. Scripture tells us where our treasure is is where our heart will be. I want my heart and my treasure to be in the eternal. I don't want to live my life with a chip on my shoulder because I'm a woman and I don't think life is treating me fairly.

Wondering why Jesus didn't appoint any female apostles is falling into the world's trap of thinking that doing big things or being well known is more important. In our Father's eyes, what the world calls little things is just as important as what the world calls big things.

When I was exhausted one evening and had taken on more than I could handle with refreshments for a large group of people at my church a few years ago, a friend of mine came to my aid. She helped me clean up and find things and put them away in the unfamiliar kitchen in our adult center. Her help was such a tremendous blessing to me. In our Father's eyes, what she did was just as important as what our pastors do when they give a Spirit-filled sermon.

What's wrong with accepting ourselves as our Father created us? I was His idea, not my parents'. And I'm learning to be content being what He created me to be.

Oops. In the first paragraph that should be "provoke" not "provike."

I don't know for sure if it will work, but here's a possible idea to rid Joel's site of MC and those like him/her.

If as many of us as possible go to his/her blog and click the objectionable content link at the top, it might force the folks at blogger to question that blog. There are blog sites that sometimes redirect to very objectionable sites. Even though the folks at blogger may not be able to find objectionable content at MC's site, they may err on the side of caution (like Joel's people did) and decide to close down MC's site anyway if enough of us click it as objectionable. Just a thought

DeuceBeanLiliBugFessZooSmidge said...

Angie,

As a woman who has been called and ordained as a minister of the Gospel, I have heard MC's kind of small thinking many times. They quote and MIS-quote Scripture to try to prove their point. I want to share some verses with you that may help:

First of all:

Gal 3:27-29
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Then this:

Luke 10:39-42
39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.
40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

The first people to preach the Gospel were women:

Matt 28:1-7

1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:
4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.
5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

This is good, too:

Psalm 68:11
11The Lord gives the word [of power]; the women who bear and publish [the news] are a great host.

When the Corinthians sent letters to Paul telling them things they were doing he responded this way to the woman question:

1 Cor 14:35-36
35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?

Deborah was a Judge in the Old Testament. Priscilla was a minister of the Gospel in the New Testament. If you notice the times when Priscilla and Aquilla were mentioned, sometimes he is named first and sometimes she is named first. I have been taught that the name that is first is the one whose ministry is at the forefront at that particular time. Also, of the names that Paul mentions in his letters, very many of those are women.

Whatever God calls you to do, do it with your whole heart and you will be pleasing to Him and no other opinion matters whatsoever!

Shalom to all the handmaidens and mighty men of God!

I too have dealt with the small minded likes of MC for most of my life as well. While not in the ministry I work in a part of a field which is about 90% male nationwide. I have heard it all and from both genders. My female room mates in college told me I couldn't get married and have a career because I wouldn't be at home to clean and take care of my husband etc etc etc. During training "you've taken a job away from a deserving male". I was and am called by God to do what I do. I prayed and prayed about marrying my husband-since we would be a non traditional household. When we decided to have a child it was only after considered prayer and what I would consider a sign from God that we were doing the right thing. I am secure in knowing that I have been called by God to work in a man's field and have a non traditional household. I in general tune out people such as MC because they are not God.

I have also heard it taught that the reason Christ appeared to the women first is because they had no position in the Jewish culture and He wanted all to know what high esteem He held women in

17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

Jib,

I have to admit that I wasn't even aware, at first, about the way some people feel about women. I was just joyfully going about obeying the Lord. When He told me it was time to be ordained, I told Him that He would have to arrange it because I didn't feel right about asking for myself. A short time later my pastor came to me and said that the Lord had told him that I needed to be ordained! He was the one, initially, who took a lot of persecution for having a woman preach in church. He protected me so well (his name is William-which means "great protector"!)that I didn't even realize anyone had a problem for a couple of years! But I'm with you. We answer to our Lord, our Master and Commander, and no one else! I pray for God's continued blessing as you continue to fulfill HIS calling on your life!

Have a great Sunday everyone!

Shalom,

Robin

not all that amazing. keep in mind Joel's was down for a while so we got kind of used to blogging here. cap that with MC and people would rather be where it is more collegial than full of strife. this is a haven. plus we can be sillier here than at Joel's because here it isn't a business/religious site all though we talk of things of faith a lot here too.

Robin,

The Galatians scripture came to my mind after I made my post.

You also reminded me of something that Joyce Meyer says. She said people kept telling her that she couldn't preach because she was a woman, and she herself told God she couldn't preach because she was a woman. She said He answered her by saying, "Don't you think I knew you were a woman when I called you?"

Some time after I made my post, the Spirit gave me an insight. After I made my post, I ordered some books at Amazon and went to my bedroom to read. When I put my book down and left my room go to the bathroom--and my post was the farthest thing from my mind--the Spirit said to me, "Genesis 3."

The telling of the Fall contains some very deep, meaningful lessons on how the enemy works, so I knew that was the part of Genesis 3 the Spirit was referring to. I kept thinking about the retelling of the Fall because I realized that MC's question and the tactics used by Satan had something in common.

The Spirit helped me realize that the serpant got Eve to focus on herself. And when we focus on ourselves and not God, we can be deceived into thinking we don't have what we should, and we can start thinking for ourselves apart from God.

I'm not called to break barriers. Maybe some day I will be, but I'm not called to that now. And your example is a very good one. God opened the door for you. And you and your Pastor were obedient to the calling of God. You didn't hear the calling and then bulldoze your way into making it happen on your own. You let God make it happen for you. Sometimes we may have to bulldoze, but we're not called to do it on our own.

For the political boffins here I have a question about Obama's religion.

Apparently he was schooled early on in a Muslim school (more specifically a madrassa in Jakarta?).

If so, is it possible that he is still a "closet" muslim and what would this mean if he would become President of the USA.

Does anyone have a viewpoint on this and also whether it is true that he attended a madrassa? Strangely this is not an issue being discussed openly in the campaigns.

Sunday is off to a running start and you are all amazing and wonderful. I think it is great and you know what, noting can overcome any of us as long as we stay focused on the Lord.

The word tells us that the battle is the Lords and the victory is ours, Hosanna! I like the Spirit that is here and I feel great coming to this wonderful foreign country cave.

I just have to share about women in the ministry with you all. For the longest time I really had a major opinion about it and that was before I was saved and even after. Then something happened to me that changed my thinking forever. I was in Tacoma, Washington with my dear precious brother. We had been called by his care provider that he had been rushed to the hospital in very critical condition, total pulmonary dysfunction and cardiac arrest. He was being kept alive by machines and she was going to have them turn off all support. She didn't have the authority to do and the hospital called for our directions. We said, help him all you can, he has fought this far so give him a chance to live. Then his primary physician in the hospital called and said it was cruel to keep him alive on machines. So, I told him, Ok, you take the machines, do everything to keep him comfortable and then let God do his work in Bobby. If the medical community has done all they can and we appreciate it, then any further results will be of God. He agreed and then we got our plane reservations made. By the time we got there he was recovering and all of the tubes except the one in the nose were removed. He was still fed through the abdomen but that is all. But after the first day or two, we knew there was something keeping him from proceeding any further.

Mother and I were on our way into the hospital the next morning and I knew the Holy Spirit was greatly in the car with us. Mother did too. Then I heard him say "Your brother is possessed by the devil and you have to cast him out." WHAT? I can't do that, only ministers of God can do that. I voiced that to him too. Immediately I heard the Holy Spirit answer me very sternly,
"You can do all things that I enable you to do." WOW! I was shaking like a leaf and Mother was so peacefully enjoying the ride to the hospital.

I learned that God! GOD! GOD! Equips whom so ever he desires to and no man or beast has any authority over it. It might not be what you wanted to do or be but he is the Master Planner and don't any of us forget it! I learned a mighty lesson that day and yes, I did do exactly as the Holy Spirit said and yes, my brother was set free and two days later, we drove him back to the Adult Care Facility that he was a resident of.

At the hospital, his doctor and nurses could not figure out what had happened until one of the Sisters came into the room and then marched to the nurses desk, and stated, "This man has been set free, Hallelujah!"

Would I have preferred to do that little liberating act? NO WAY! Scared the pee right out of me! Literally! But just as the Holy Spirit said, you can do all things that I tell you because it is the power of the Holy Spirit doing them. Not man! No Way! Only God! Only the precious name of Jesus is able to make knees bow, tongues confess and captives set free.

HALLELUJAH! Oh, I am going to shout!

Anyway, don't any of you let a devil from hell rob you of your divine appointment in the Body of Christ. Robin shared some of the most powerful scriptures in the word to dispel his attacks. One other thing I want to illuminate for all, man and woman! God's kingdom is the power of Love. God so LOVED the world, and Christ said that we would know and be able to recognize the believer because they LOVED GOD WITH ALL THEIR HEART, MINDS AND SOULS, AND THEIR NEIGHBOR AS THEMSELVES. This man isn't able to do that. He has a Love Handicap of major proportions and an ego to cover it all up. He considers himself to be a prophet and there is documentation to prove it.

So, just pray for him and bless those who curse you and say all manner of evil against you. That turns their cursing back against them.

He has become another thorn in the side but we don't have to let him fester. Put some anointing oil on him and he will slip right out.

Have a good God's day in the Lord and Praise him that we have been found worthy of persecution.

Love you all,
Grany

THUNNDA,

I for one, have had some very strange reactions to Obama. When I first heard him with the keynote speech at the Democratic Convention, can't remember whether it was the first time Bush ran or the second, I was impressed with his speech. I don't look at a person's color and I hope I never will again. A lot of people were congratulating him on a fine speech but there was so much talk about it being the first time a person of Afro-American ancestry gave a keynote. I was impressed by what he said and how he acted. I was impressed greatly. I realize there was a lot of liberal gobbly gook but underneath it all there was substance.

But for the presidency I really feel that we don't need another far left or far right president. We need someone who has weathered the road in getting things done in Washington, who is a bona fide leader in foreign affairs and legislation that is sensible. We need someone who can bring this country together in thought, goals, and beliefs. I don't believe Obama can do it right now. I am hoping he will open his eyes and see that the liberal thinking is sick.

I have doubts about his Muslim upbringing because it came out of the Hillary camp but Obama has stated that his faith in Jesus Christ is central to him. I do believe it is a question that deserves a straight forward answer to the votes of this country. I am hoping he makes some distance between his supporters in the future if he does win the nomination for the Democrats.

It would be so easy to get deceived right now by the glamour or smooth talk of a great pretender. Someone like Marcel at Joel's can be spotted right out, but what about the other type that never lets their true colors show. Take for instance Billy the wild kid from Arkansas. His play ground was in the city that I lived in prior to his first run at anything worthwhile in Arkansas. He had an ego problem back then and came out against John Paul Hammerschmidt, the long term Senator from Arkansas. Clinton was a know it all, groomed by William Fulbright and bank rolled by one of the most ruthless oil magnates of Arkansas, Oklahoma and beyond, Whit Stephens and his brother.

He ran for the Senate Seat of John Paul and lost most unmanly like you have ever seen. He stormed, stomped and gritted his teeth. Then ran for Treasurer of Arkansas. By this time his grooming was progressing nicely. Two years latter it was almost complete and the rest is history. Wild Willy Billy is personality perfect when he wants something. But if he loses or is found out for the undercover things he has done, it is all bare knuckles and fangs from there on out. Together, Bill and Hill make a famous couple in the Bible come alive.

So, I don't trust any of them to tell you the truth. I have felt this way about most of the elections and it is only getting worse. But Thuunda the bible tells us that all of the worlds political systems will utterly fail them and they will have no one to turn to except God. I believe we are seeing this happen right before our eyes.

Maybe I am skeptical about the outcome of this election but I don't see how one man can do much for this nation unless we stop the extreme liberal bent we are now experiencing. No way! Common sense has to come back into our thinking, plus telling the truth and the idea that the government has to take care of everyone erased from our minds. We have an obligation to be obedient to the law and that God is the one who sets our leaders in their offices. How distasteful that must be when you have the likes of our current political system. Maybe the correction of this country is going to come through the government but we will just have to wait and see. In the meantime, please join us in praying for this nation as we are praying for yours.

In God's love,
Grany

not sure that I could do that-wow.

very powerful discussion here today.

regarding Obama-While I know we can't truly judge the actual state of a person's soul I have to tell you I do not think Obama is a Christian period. Socially he is even further left of Hilary-pro homosexual, pro abortion etc. To even be a member of his church you must be BLACK-no whites may join this church. There have been some interesting articles on wnd about this man's church taken directly from the churches website. For example they are dedicated to the continent of Africa as their homeland. I shall have to track down them and post them here. He will be a bigger disaster than Hillary for this country. Keep in mind-Oprah who is a very staunch liberal is endorsing this guy. Oprah's social values are very likely diametrically opposite of most of us who post on this blog-do we really think she'd be endorsing someone we could actually vote for?

About the only ones I could stomach voting for would be Fred Thompson, Ron Paul or Duncan Hunter, possibly Romney (actually far to wishy washy and obviously saying stuff just to get elected) and I don't exactly like everything about them but I like more than I dislike.

(as a side note the black values system is not a bad thing-if people of all races were reaching out like this to all people the feds wouldn't have to do any of it-just omit the words black and it's a good thing for everyone. it shouldn't be about race so on the other hand it could be construed as mildly offensive that these are "black only" values?)

Actually our sermon this morning was on ownership of our faith and ownership in the ministry of the local church. If we "owned" our faith more we'd be on fire for God. If we individually "owned" the ministry of the local church more the churches would be full to overflowing, there would be less want in the communities etc.

Thuunda, Shalom! Daniel Pipes did the original article on Obama/Muslim connection. You can find the relevant articles here and here.

What it really comes down to is that Obama may consider himself a Christian; he may never have considered himself to be Muslim, but in terms of Muslim culture Obama is an apostate. He was born to a Muslim father. His name (Barak Hussein Obama) is a "style" that in most African countries would mark him as a Muslim. After the divorce, his mother married another Muslim, and they moved to Indonesia. He went to a Catholic school, where because of his name and the fact that his father was Muslim (although a non-practicing or non-devout one), his registration card listed him as Muslim. As a result, the school put him in an Islamic class two hours each week. What's more, when his step-father DID go to the mosque, Obama went with him.

In Islamic culture, all these things add up to Obama being a Muslim. Since he's now stating that he is a Christian, that makes him an apostate. Now, according to the second article, there is (according to some scholars) a difference as to the penalties, depending on when he became an apostate. If it happened before pubescence, he should have been imprisoned until be reached pubescence, then he would be "invited" to join Islam. If it happened after pubescence, then he has incurred the death penalty.

It's one thing to have the president being under constant protection. It's another to have a president with a fatwa and possibly a price on his head as an apostate. I would not want to work with the Secret Service if Obama gets elected.

This is my personal understanding regarding women's role in leadership positions in the Church today ordinations.

I think that the denominations that have taught that women should never hold positions of ministry in the church are completely contrary to Scripture, and is usually based on comments by Paul in 1 Corinthians 14:34 and in 1 Timothy 2:12.

The fundamental mistake is to assume that Paul is addressing all womankind in 1 Corinthians 14:34. In context, the subject Paul is discussing is about prophesying in church services, and how it should be done. It cannot be used to forbid women from prophesying, because this would contradict Scripture, notably

29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge.
30 But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent.
31 For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged.
32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
34 Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says.
35 And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.
[1 Corinthians 14:29-35, NKJV]

Here it is specifically addressed to unsaved married women who were making audible comments (actually giving false prophecies cursing Jesus!) in church services, trying to present alternative teaching, and being un-submissive to their husbands - actually not treating them with any kind of respect.

In 1 Tim 2:12, Paul is actually addressing a completely different issue than that of forbidding women in the church to teach.

8 I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting;
9 in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing,
10 but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.
11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submission.
12 And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.
13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
15 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.
[1 Tim 2:8-15, NKJV]

He is in fact saying that he will not presently allow unsaved women (presently married to believing husbands) who came into the company of the "called-out ones" (the true Church) to teach wrong concepts of female superiority (i.e. Eve came before Adam) and teaching the other women pagan sexual practices.

Both these false teachings were derived from the pagan worship going on around them in Ephesus - worship of the pagan goddess Artemis (known locally as Diana of the Ephesians) whose proselytes taught that women were much superior to men (giving rise to the cult of the Amazonian women), and that Eve came before Adam), and which also involved prostitution as part of the worship).

Furthermore, the phrase "to have authority over a man" in the NKJV/KJV is actually an incorrect translation - because the original Greek word translated "authority" has strong connotations of overt sexual dominance, control and bondage associated with it!!

In Titus 2:3, Paul tells Titus that elder women should be teachers of the right way of life,
"Likewise, teach the older women (elder women) to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good," (or, to be a "teacher of the right" way of life).

Paul says elder women are to be "teachers of the right" in the original Greek phrase "kalodidaskalos" Strong's 2567, a teacher of the right. He suggests they start with instructing the younger women, but he does not limit them to teaching only females!

All through the Bible there were women in leadership positions, and this continued on into the early church, as can be seen in Acts 2, when ALL of the believers, men and women, were filled with Holy Spirit and spoke in other tongues, not just the apostles.

There were even women apostles (Junia is specifically mentioned by Paul); certainly there were women leading and pastoring churches.

There are many instances of Paul praising women who teach the truth such as:
* Priscilla, see Acts 18:2,18,26; 1 Cor. 16:19; and Romans 16:3;
* Phoebe, a "diakonon" servant/minister in Romans 16:1;
* Junia in Romans 16:7, "outstanding among the apostles";
* Nympha, and "her house church"-- the only leader mentioned by name in Laodicea, Col. 4:15.
* Also Euodia and Syntyche who "contended at my side in the cause of the gospel" verbally wrestling with unbelievers, Phil. 4:1-3.

He hails many other women as co-workers in Christ Jesus. If Paul had issued a blanket edict against all women teaching everywhere Paul would have reprimanded these women instead of praising them!

There are lots of political opinions out there.

A lot of people are thinking and saying ABB "Anybody But Bush".

They think his administations policies have made a mess of things economically, environmentally and that this administration has bullied many countries these last 7 years and that our reputation has diminished.

Because of the mess in Iraq (that finally seems to be getting under control), people are very leary of all of this Iranian talk.

They think it's all about oil.

OBama is a gifted public speaker, who stands up for the little guy, as opposed to Bush who is a terrible public speaker and stands for big business and the rich.

Many folks do not think that Obama has the experience to lead the country now, but think he may have a future in leading the country.

I do agree with Alesia though. Not everyone here is from america, other people are not into hearing about this stuff....so this is prob not the best place to keep bringing it all up....but those are just my thoughts.

Donna, are ya kidding me???

So country, let's be ignorant enough to vote for the smooth talker, like Slick Willy was.
What difference does it make that Obama is a good "public speaker" & what difference does it make that Bush is not?
We as CHRISTIANS can NEVER, EVER (not now, not ever!) contemplate voting for someone as liberal minded as Obama.

I'm sorry, I did not realize that you too were a democrat. Because only a democrat would make the comment that this person is for "the little guy" & this person is for "big business & the rich"
Who do you think, in large part, keeps the economy going? The rich & the businesses Should the government be looking out for them? ABSOLUTELY. What do you think happens when they don't? Small businesses go under, large businesses jack up pricing & start laying off people or go overseas. What happens then? Prices are high, people are layed off (or can't find jobs that pay well), so they stop buying = KILLS the economy!

The biggest difference, I see, between democrats & republicans (besides moral issues) is that Democrats are always running around saying "Wah, What are you going to do for me (the little guy)"
Whereas Republicans actually see the bigger picture.

Donna, I don't mean to be so harsh with you, but that way of thinking infuriates me. I do know that "there are lots of political opinions out there" & I generally try to bite my tongue, but I HAD TO make a rebuttal this time.

And there is a perception by many people that the democrats are for the little guy and the republicans for big business and the rich.

In fact, I'm currently reading "America the Last Best Hope" (the second book) by William Bennett. It's interesting that history repeats itself. Before the US entered World War II, there were many people who wanted nothing to do with war. A group called "America First" was formed.

Things changed with Pearl Harbor, but afteward, there were people who accused FDR of knowing about the attack ahead of time but keeping it secret for the purpose of going to war. I read that with amazement, thinking to myself, "Now where have I heard that before?"

Human nature doesn't change! And people still aren't learning from history.

Hi Wilma,

Your posts are so entertaining. Keep 'em coming!

On Obama. As I said before, he bothers me on a level I cannot explain. His true colors will only come to the front if he gets elected. Mark my words.

This may sound judgemental, but anyone that supports abortion needs to have his head read if he thinks he is a Christian. Sacrificing babies on the temple of self interest is evil. Period!

I will pray for this election and for your country Wilma, it is the last bastion of true Christianity (think bible belt) in the world. Thank you for praying for South Africa, it is much needed here!

God bless you all today!

sigh,

there really was just no way to write that without sounding defensive was there. Alesia-truly didn't take offense honest and couldn't think of a well worded non defensive reply. no you don't have hoof and mouth disease and thank you for your kind words about my soapbox at Joel's. Honestly some of that had to be Spirit led because until I wrote it I had never thought of the fact that these little tiny humans we keep killing off-Christ died for them too and if He died for them too how doubly precious are they?

I agree with your response about the economic re-distribution of wealth that the dems always propose as well. (although I notice that these very rich democrats somehow never mean their wealth also) It is one of the reasons I appreciate the fair tax or flat tax folks. As someone who is self employed I pay taxes twice on the same money. Money comes in to the corporation and unless I spend it all or pay myself everything that is in my corporate account and "loan" it back to myself with the start of the new year I have to pay corporate taxes on this money. I then turn around and pay myself a salary from this money which came into my corporation which has already been taxed(after paying my overhead) and the government then turns around and taxes the same money again! None of the money earned of course is profit actually -I don't know about you all but I work darn hard for the money I get.

well that's about enough soap boxes for one day. I think I'll go to bed.

Thanks Alesia. That will help greatly!

On the subject of Obama being discussed so much here: I'm the guilty one for asking the questions :). But note I'm not from the USA. However, I believe there's a great deal of interest around the world in this particular election.

And Jim, your are a walking, talking dictionary. Thanks for your insights.

Jib - I'm so thankful for your posts about abortion. I itch to comment, but can't, if you think I'm brutal talking politics, I'm a downright volcano erupting talking about that issue.

Angie - I do think that was Donna's opinion, based on previous posts. If I'm wrong, Donna I apologize for using your name. But I can not apologize for stating my opinion on that. I wanted to say so much more on that topic but did not want to have a mile long post. Believe me, that WAS me holding back!
In a lame attempt at defense of myself - I did previously state that I ought not talk politics. Remember, I said if I was in public office, I'd get assassinated!
The last time I posted about politics I told my daughter I was doing so & she screamed "NOOOOOOOOO - SHUT UUUUUUP"

The Australian media reports very little on the Presidential race. When it does, it's usually about Clinton or Obama. The consensus view in Australia is that there will be a Democrat President this year and that it will probably be Clinton.

Re Obama; as charismatic and articulate as he may be, my gut feeling is that he would be a disaster as President.

I sense the US public has aready decided they want a Democrat in office. But I could be wrong.

Angie was right. Those were not my personal opinions.

The only real important area I am "liberal" about would be healthcare coverage.

Donna

I'm going to bit my tongue really hard and not say anything about socialized medicine if I can help it except this one little thing. A rather substantial percentage of those included in the number of those with out health care are without health care by choice not because they can't get it or afford it. Please do adequate research into the topic of socialized medicine before you actually get what you are asking for. Our government had to privatize the usmail system because they couldn't get a letter efficiently and timely across town and you want them to run our health care system? If the Canadian health care system is so great how come there are a bunch of them in Mexico, India, Thailand and the US getting their procedures done?

jeri from SA said...

I have also joined the picture gang! Shows how we can be protected by the others that care.

campsmore said...

Donna, my comment was directed towards you. I didn't get a whole lot of sleep last night so my wires are crossed this morning.

I do agree that there is something terribly wrong in our healthcare, but socialized medicine is not the answer. I have relatives in Canada who can testify how frustrating it is. An aunt (with brain cancer) was put on hold for chemo and radiation several months because that treatment is not available in her area. Socialized medicine sounds good when you're suffering and cannot afford it. But what good is it if you cannot get to it or have to wait until the cancer has spread to other areas of her body? She had to travel hundreds of miles across Canada to get to her healthcare at her own expense. She's lives in BC

My friend's dad needed open heart surgery, he was a ticking time bomb. He was put on a 6 mos waiting list.

That doesn't sound like progress to me, free or not.

But that's just my 2 cents worth.

I don't have answers for our healthcare dilema. Perhaps insurance companies should be "encouraged" to cover preventative medicine.

Thunda and Jib,

I've seen Mac and Mr. Hyde and believe me, they don't even look anything alike.

jib said...

there was a really simple solution presented to congress and the senate but it was shot down.

some things you may not know

by current medicare regs doctors are not allowed to give care away (at least not without jumping through hoops that would make your head spin). that's right in this country it is essentially ILLEGAL for doctors to give away care.

current laws state that they must treat anyone who presents to the hospital with an emergency or life threatening condition without regard to the persons ability to pay. but they have to charge cuz they can't give the care away.

interesting dilemma.
The whole thing is easily enough solved. Currently doctors can not claim the bad debt of non paying patients on their corporate taxes. It has been suggested that doctors be allowed to declare that bad debt on their coporate tax returns as charitable donations. People get care, doctors get credit in the tax system for the debt incurred say based on the medicare fee schedule. It would work but our leaders aren't interested in that solution.

To make your heads really spin. The feds have now started a program called the Trailblazer program. it is specifically for illegal immigrants and they have to sign up for the program as do the doctors and then the feds will pay the docs for those illegal immigrants enrolled in the program. Oh and they can't be deported either.

campsmore said...

The healthcare system is official sick.

jim.carroll said...

Jib, Shalom!

Really good points on the "free" health care discussion. I'm going to ask my two brothers who are doctors what they would think about the tax-deductible health care and get back to you.

The biggest reason I can see for the Fed. government not wanting to do this is control. For one thing, how do you check to see that the doctors actually treated the patients, that they treated them for free, and that the value of the surgery or other medical treatment is what the doctors say it is? It's one thing to claim that you've given, say, $2000 out of pocket over the year to different charities without receipts; it's another to say that this surgery cost $10,000. (It normally would have cost $7,000, but there were complications.) When my late father was still practicing medicine, this was his second biggest complaint about the Medicare/Medicaid system -- that the reimbursement fees were set by someone in Washington, DC, who apparently assumed that since we were in a rural area, everything cost less (HA!), so he should get paid less, too. (His biggest complaint was how the system forced him to send people home even when they weren't getting well as fast as the government said they should. He who pays the piper...)

(Strike that. He served on the hospital board for the county hospital, and his BIGGEST complaint was how there were seven different regulatory groups that required them to verify, each year, that their doorways met certain standards. Guess how many different standards there were. That was just for the hospital. I won't go into the paperwork involved in running the rest home.)

Don't forget -- lab work is also expensive. Either the labs would have to also be able to do charity work, or the doctor would have to pay for the labs out of pocket and then take the deduction. If we're talking a hospital stay, then the hospital corporation would have to be able to take the deduction. Wait -- we did that before, didn't we? Think of all the hospitals that had been set up by churches and religious organizations (such as the Sisters of Mercy). Only a handful of those operations remain, now, because it's just too expensive to handle the paperwork and remain competitive when you're trying to do this as a charity, and the people don't pay their hospital bills because, hey, it's a charity.

I think it's a VERY good idea; I just don't see it happening for anything but routine health care, which would STILL take a great burden off the hospital health care system.

Hey y'all!

Hope this finds y'all doing well!

JIN - thanks for the message at my blog. That was very nice of you. I haven't been absent for any reason other than work, my wife being sick and trying to take care of her and our 6 month old son! I'm just a guy after all and you know multi-tasking is a male shortcoming! (allegedly...LOL)

Last night was our first meeting of the new Bible study my wife and I are leading. It was a great time, very edifying and we are all very excited to be doing this study on the importance of prayer.

Over the weekend, we rented the movie "The Kingdom". If you haven't seen it, the basis of the story is that radical jihadists attack a western community (oil company people I think) that are in Saudi Arabia. The attack is both diversionary in nature (shooting random people) followed by a suicide bomber that is even more deadly. The victims are largely women and children. The FBI then gets permission to go investigate for a limited amount of time. We didn't end up watching the whole thing as we had other things to do but I had wanted to see it since I work in federal law enforcement. The attack, while indirectly so in much of it, was graphic to the point that it upset my wife who was just shocked almost to where she wanted to turn it off. I came away with a few different reactions which I will share here if you will indulge me...

First, the reaction of the people who survived the attack and the animosity and contempt they held for Saudi officials (the attackers had been dressed as Saudi police). Although just a movie, the emotional response it brought out in both my wife and I (in her case, abject sadness...in mine, nail-spitting anger) made me think how smug or out of touch we must seem to the Israelis at times during the "peace process" when we ask them to play nice with their Arab neighbors. The same neighbors who have sanctioned or blithely ignored attacks on Israeli buses, cafes, movie theaters, etc where there fathers/sons/brother/sisters/mothers/daughters have been gunned down or blown to pieces to shouts of "allah ackbar". Would we accept the same pressure for restraint? No, we would not, as we have proven since 9/11, but we ask that of them.

Putting it in another context, imagine if you will that for some ideological reason, Mexico or Canada decided that the USA is an abomination and that it must be eliminated. That the geographical existence of the USA, since we don't believe in the Great Canuck, is apostasy and should be wiped from the earth. Further that they then proceeded to, with the government's assistance or colusion, to blow themselves up in our malls, or at Fenway Park, for example. Is there ANYTHING that ANYONE could say to us that would prevent us from throwing the entire weight of the U.S. military, intelligence agencies, police forces, etc, against those who wish to do us harm? Not a chance. Yet, we and the world ask Israel to be congenial, while cowtowing to the Arab states.

Secondly, I find myself wrestling with my personal reaction. I am called to love my enemies and pray for them, but I am afraid I would spend most of my time in prayer asking for restraint from my heavenly Father, because my initial reaction is that my enemies would recive no mercy, no quarter and no respite on this side of the veil or the other. This is clearly a wrong attitude but apart from an immense outpouring of grace from Jesus, I think that would be my reaction.

Anyway, I have probably rambled to long as it is, and while I have more...this is probably more than enough. Sorry to interrupt the present discussion, I am enjoying reading the comments!

JIB - Oooops, I typo'd you as "JIN" in my post...my bad

jim.carroll said...

Boro_Eagle, Shalom!

RE: spelling "JIB" as "JIN" -- don't worry. About this time of day I can always use some JIN. With just a splash of tonic.

As for Canada's animosity towards the US, as it so happens, I'm finishing up a 13-book series by Harry Turtledove which touches upon that very theme. It's a set of trilogies (with four books in the final series) that explores an alternate reality where the Confederacy won the war. A small event involving lost cigars was enough to make it so that the Confederacy wins and America becomes divided into the USA and the CSA. It is NOT a happy future. Every ten years or so, some new war breaks out. Britain and France become the CSA's allies and America's enemies. Because of this, during the Great War, Canada invades the northern US while the Confederacy strikes from the south. This time, the US wins and takes over Canada as occupied territory. The Canadians do not like the US, and their reaction belies the image of the gentle Canadian most Americans have.

The entire series makes me VERY happy the North won the war! You can read more about the lost cigars that lost the war here.

As for "The Kingdom" ...

SPOILER ALERT! IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ SPOILERS, SCROLL DOWN OR CLICK ON MY NAME TO SHRINK THIS POST!

... The final scene just leaves you empty. It switches between the FBI agent telling his friends what he had said to one person after the bombing, and the Arab mother asking her daughter what her grandfather had said as he lay dying from being shot by the FBI agents. In both cases, both people said the same thing:

"Don't worry. We will kill them all."

Yes, it is very hard, and yes, we need to pray for our enemies.

Praying for your wife's health,

<><

Back to healthcare for just a minute..here in Vt it seems like we finally have at least some of the affordable healthcare figured out.

If people have access to health insurance, great.

If they don't they have a few options.

We have these federally subsidized medical centers that do practically everything...from check ups, to broken bones, mental health care, even dental they accept most any type of insurance and for those who have no health insurance there is a sliding fee scale that is reasonable.

We also just started being able to offer anyone health insurance through 2 (I think) diff health insurance companies that is also based on a sliding fee scale.

So anyone here now has access to affordable health care, if they know to sign up for it.

I am pretty sure the most anyone would pay would be 340 a month and it covers most things, even check ups and preventative care, hospitalizations and even chiropractic care.

So it is not socialized medicine...but affordable health care.

I hope it lasts, as many people here do not have health insurance available thru their employers.

jim.carroll said...

Shalom, all!

I was reviewing some old posts in preparation for my latest "Paranoia Update" that I send my family. I came up with two observations that I wanted to share.

1) Deuteronomy 1:3 starts out "In the fortieth year..." The fortieth year of what? The fortieth year of their wandering. Why were they wandering? They were wandering because of the twelve spies sent out, ten returned with lies about the land that G_D was giving the people. So G_D forced them to wander for 40 years until all the people of that generation that had believed the lies and not G_D's truth had died.

Now let's consider today -- we are in the fortieth year since the unification of Jerusalem, and we are discussing the re-division of Jerusalem and of Israel. Why now? Because when Israel captured Temple Mount, THEY GAVE THE MOUNT BACK TO THE MUSLIMS! G_D had led them to great victories -- victories that are not studied in war colleges, because they are so outside the norm, outside expectations, there is nothing for any other people to learn. And after G_D had led them to this great victory, where the lands from the sea to the Jordan now belonged to Israel, and Jerusalem was once more controlled by the Jews and not the Gentiles, THEY GAVE G_D'S HOLY MOUNTAIN BACK TO THE GENTILES! THE LEADERS BELIEVED THE LIE THAT G_D WOULD LET ISRAEL SUFFER IF THEY DIDN'T GIVE THE MOUNT BACK TO THE MUSLIMS!

Am I crazy for seeing this connection? I mean, more than usual.

2) When explaining about the dates in the Hebrew calendar and the significance of "the first day of the eleventh month", I started thinking about something I had written. I had said that we are in the 40th year since the unification of Jerusalem, that it started on May 16, 2007 and would end on June 2, 2008. Lightshine had mentioned Kristalnacht in Germany (Nov. 9-10 1938) as a possible start date for Zechariah's 70 years of indignation against Jerusalem. Since we're talking about things occuring "in the XXth year" (i.e., sometime within the year), what if Kristalnacht was not the beginning of the 70h year but the end of the first year of the 70 years?

I did some research and found that whereas there was anti-Jewish legislation being enacted earlier, on November 5, 1937 (a year before Kristalnacht), Hitler held a meeting with military commanders and cabinet members, where he outlined and confirmed his plans for conquest. It would start with Austria and Czechoslovakia, and continue to the east through Poland to Russia. It was here that he made clear what his intentions were and caused the people underneath him to begin planning for the conquest and elimination of undesired people in these lands.

What really shocked me, though, was when I put the date Nov. 5, 1937 into the Hebrew Date Converter. It came up as 1 Kislev 5698. For some reason, the date 1 Kislev is setting off alarm bells in my head, but I can't figure out why. It is the ninth month of the Hebrew calendar. Can anyone think of something that happened on the first day of the ninth month?
