We do not have to make ourselves suffer in order to merit forgiveness. We simply receive the forgiveness earned by Christ … we earn our forgiveness with our repentance, but in the gospel we just receive it.

Pastor Ray is leaving for Israel right now. He usually goes w/groups but the Lord strongly impressed upon him to go solo & wait upon Him.
Our service time was shortened to accommodate the flight schedule.
So.. I wonder if he will return w/words for the body of Christ as well? (He's gone for a week.)

Hey there! Yes, Brant Hansen is my sister's husband. He is a very talented man. God has given him many gifts and it is always interesting and/or funny to listen to him on the radio or to have a conversation with him. Wish I could see the bands! Great to hear about the BRB!
Very concerned about Israel today and what the near future holds.
I work with the elderly and it seems I have quite a few conversations with them on the future that the Lord has for us. I always like to remind them that when the Lord comes back He will make all things new, they won't hurt anymore and they will be able to enjoy life. The ones who speak with me about the Lord will say "I wish He would hurry up!"

Also very thought provoking link from Jerry Golden's newest report to an audio show called the light gate, mostly about the oil leaks in the Gulf and lots of stuff that's not making the news. The speaker also mentions two more silver cigar shaped objects were seen in Russia last week. I think that if we are all still on terra firma through the fall those who follow Him will have HUGE witnessing and service opportunities.

DIVINE DIRECTION
How nice will it be, if the Lord Himself will give us the directions to proceed in our life? That is what exactly the Lord wants to do for His children. In the modern days that we live in, we have so many advanced technologies to give us directions when we want to get somewhere.
The Bible talks about divine direction in the scriptures. God has a road map for each and every one of us. God knows exactly where to take us. He knows the minute details of our life. He has the blue print for our whole life already. We do not have to ask him to put a new plan for our lives. All we have to do it just fit in His plans for our lives. His Word of God declares in Jeremiah 29:11, 'For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope'.
To get to the bigger picture, our God goes step by step. Though He knows the end from the beginning, He does not tell you the destination right away. All He wants to tell you is one step at a time. And the Lord God Almighty orders each step.
Steps are ordered:
The word that is mentioned in the Bible is 'ordered' just like the way you order your food in a restaurant. You order as much as you can eat. In the same way, God orders our steps and steps that we are able to take. God's word says, 'He orders every step'. 'The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way' (Ps 37:23).
Have you noticed the way we plan things in our life. Most of them do not happen at all. Sometime people are concerned about things that may not even come to pass. Still there are some who spend half of their time in just worrying about things that are irrelevant?
The Bible says, 'A man's heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps' (Pro 16:9). Notice the word 'step'. Our God directs our steps.
Paths are directed:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths (Pro 3:5). The key to unlocking God's direction is by acknowledging Him in all our ways.
Many think that God's paths are full of lack. That is not true. Just because you have not seen abundance doesn't means that God's paths are not abundant. The Bible says, 'You crown the year with Your goodness, And Your paths drip with abundance' (Ps 65:11)
When we are in God's direction, we are heading towards abundance. It may not feel like it, it may not look like it. But the Word of God says, God's path drip with abundance. Let not the devil talk you out of that word. Our God is not a God of lack. He is a God of abundance. His paths drip with abundance. All you want to be is, in His path. God's word is final.
How to know God's directions:

1. Prayer:
Look at the prayer of David, a man after God's own heart. David was a king but yet He had the time to pray to the Lord God Almighty to show him His ways and teach him His paths. 'Show me your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths' (Ps 25:4). Direct my steps by Your Word (Ps 119:136).
Take God at His word when you pray. I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with my eye (Ps 32:8).
Tell Him, 'Lord Jesus, I am here to ask for your directions in my life'. I do not want to go in my path but take me in Your ways, Lord. You will soon see God coming through.
2. Word of God:
God's word is the lamp unto your feet and a light to your path (Ps 119:105). After you have prayed, do not expect a prophet to come out, and put his hand on you give you a prophesy. That may not happen. That is not always the way God wants to work.
Expect God to reveal things from His heart to yours. He wants you to know His ways from His word. So while you are going through the Word of God, listen to the Holy Spirit for revelation from the word Write down the impressions and ideas He gives you. Let the truth He reveals to you settle in and begin to work in you.
3. Listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit:
The thing that we need to understand is that we cannot hurry God into anything. The Bible calls it 'waiting'. There is something called waiting upon the Lord that is so important in our spiritual walk. The Holy Spirit talks in a still small voice right in your heart. He loves to talk to us. When our heart is in the right place, we sure will hear Him speak to us.
Isaiah 30:21 says, 'Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, "This is the way, walk in it." Whenever you turn to the right hand Or whenever you turn to the left".
Jesus said in John 10:27 says, 'My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me'. We need to fine tune our spiritual ears all the time so that we can hear Him.

There is always Middle East conflict and war is frequently breaking out in that region. Why could a forthcoming war change the world? A little too sensational, you say? When the "epicenter" is involved, always pay attention. While the situation in the Middle East is generally unstable, it could move to the disaster zone this summer or fall.
Major General Paul Vallely is a wise military man. He is now making a media circuit warning anyone who will listen that dark storm clouds are on the horizon in the Middle East. He has gotten information, it would seem, from Israel because what he is sharing is detailed. He surely hasn't gotten it from the Obama administration who is a part of the legions of nations deceived that if only Israel would go away, there would be world peace.
We're back to the term an "axis of evil." This axis is scheming to wipe out Israel and the nations include Iran, Syria, Russia, and the biggest player, Hezbollah which operates in south Lebanon. Israel went to war with Hezbollah in 2006. It was half-hearted even though the destruction on both sides was major. According to Vallely's sources, the Iranians are working with Syria and Hezbollah and are planning a pre-emptive strike soon to stop Israel's expected pre-emptive move against Iran. What a chess board! This operation is coming down to the wire. Sources say the chaos will begin in a few weeks to a few months. It is all based on the fact that Iran is now set to go with her nukes and most of them are pointed at Israel.
Here is the startling news: Just weeks ago a Soviet sub docked in Beirut, Lebanon. It was flying the Iranian flag. Workers on the sub were seen to be wearing masks suggesting that they were unloading something chemical. And it was likely a weapon or weapons of mass destruction.
But Hezbollah has extensive plans that go beyond this. The potential Hezbollah offensive includes chemically armed SCUD missiles with a 450 km range, preemptive strikes on Israeli air fields, and a wave of tunnel attacks that cross from Lebanon into Israel. There are some 60,000 rockets and missiles in south Lebanon hiding in houses, orchards, and miscellaneous buildings. Some of these are advanced scuds which have the capability to hit every city in Israel. The intention is to rein terror on Israel with maximum damage. Israel has been giving out gas masks -- a procedure that has become all too frequent.

General Vallely states that Israel's jets and airstrips are in the sites of the enemy. Hezbollah and other participants in this forthcoming battle want to make it impossible for Israel to strike anyone by air. Vallely has highlighted possible chemical weapons of mass destruction, thousands of scud missiles, tunnels, and neutralizing Israel's fighter jets. It seems all the bases have been covered. And don't forget the "martyrs." The enemy is stocking up on young men and women who will joyfully place themselves in positions where they can self-detonate with maximum damage. They will likely use the tunnels as well.
So what does Washington think of Hezbollah? John Brennan, assistant to US President Barack Obama for homeland security and counterterrorism, told a Washington conference on Tuesday that Lebanese terrorist militia Hezbollah has evolved significantly over the years, and cannot today be defined as a purely hostile and evil entity.
Reuters quoted Brennan as telling conference participants that Hezbollah is a "very interesting organization" that has evolved from a "purely terrorist organization" into a movement that now boasts members of parliament and even cabinet ministers. Brennan states, "I'm glad to see that Hezbollah is renouncing terrorism and violence..."
Oh, really? Is this deception, delusion, or bold-face lies?
The kind of an attack outlined in this article will force Israel to strike back with ferocity. If chemical weapons are dumped on her, she will have to use her own weapons of mass destruction. We have the makings of a disaster in the Middle East and the fall-out will be felt around the world. A Jew will not be safe anywhere. A friend of Israel may not be either. Don't expect any help or comfort from the White House or State Department. Israel is their sacrificial lamb.
So she is on her own -- except for God. This is good! He won't let her down. God has a covenant with Israel that is repeated throughout the Bible. A prominent passage is Genesis 17:6-8. God is not just a covenant maker -- He is a covenant keeper! Take that to heart, Christian. With God on our side, that is a majority!
The Jews were irresponsible with their slow reaction to the warnings of the 1930s and 1940s and the results were catastrophic. Over one-third of European Jewry was annihilated. They made a second mistake in 1973 when Israel was caught off guard in the Yom Kippur War. On a smaller scale, Israel has made mistakes in lesser wars such as with Hezbollah in 2006. She was forced to fight with one arm tied behind her back and few ground troops. When she doesn't finish the job, her enemies return and everything is more deadly. Had she finished the job properly with Hezbollah in 2006, we might not have the scenario building that is outlined here.
The Western world is myopic. At best they give a gigantic yawn as it concerns issues that are far away from home. Besides, people are struggling with their own problems and they feel they cannot take on more catastrophes. But a major Middle East war will shake up the world so come out from under your denial blanket if that's where you are. At the very least, pray about this volatile issue. Inform others. Ask your pastor to give a message on the importance of Israel. At the same time, show compassion to the Arab world who is steeped in a religion that encourages their followers to die for Allah. Many disillusioned Muslims are coming to faith in Jesus Christ.

The biggest weapon being used by Satan is ignorance. Most people have not a clue as to the historical issues surrounding Middle East conflicts. Most Christians do not know that the term "Palestinian" was never used before the mid-1960s when Yasser Arafat coined the term. There is so much historical revisionism that has taken place it is a wonder anyone can figure out the complexities of the Middle East. I encourage you to take a look at a DVD I made two years ago entitled Myths and Facts About the Middle East. This explains some of misconceptions.

We stand in confident expectation that God relishes the impossible and is able/willing to deliver His children out of the worst possible scenarios. Wish I had a way to share that message.
death might be the best thing for her. apparently her parents lawyers have so delayed things that she turns 18 in a matter of a few months per the article. at that time she'll be deported because she wasn't born here. if deported she'll be shipped back to Sri Lanka where she will be jailed or institutionalized and likely killed or at the very least tortured. i just hope she doesn't get it into her head that this is a punishment for leaving Islam which some idiot is bound to suggest
What a sad plight Rifqa has been facing. The Lord has a plan for her & I'm certain in the end He will be glorified though it.
You wonder why some Christians end up as Martyrs or killed. From some of the stories I've read- particular circumstances of Christian Martyrs have inspired hundreds if not thousands to accept Christ.
I recently read an account of a Missionary who was killed by Buddhists in the past. They took his "holy book" and placed it on their shrine to their gods as an offering for the blood shed.
Eventually someone came along who could read the language in dead Missionary’s Bible so the tribal people wanted to know what it said since it sat up on the shrine for years.
As you can guess- the Words of the Lord affected the people so much that the entire village converted to Christianity.
So who knows how the Lord will work out Rifqa's situation for the
benefit of those around her but I bet in the end more people will know the Lord because of it.
I had this dream last night that's bugging me today.
I know why the "theme" of it came up because we just got done w/a weekend of dance competition.
The girls were performing in a theatre similar to the one we were just at.
As I was looking at the stage - no one was on it- the seats were filled with young girls all dressed up. The costume colors were vivid. I was standing behind everyone so all I could really see where the backs of heads/shoulders.
In the middle of this group was a huge amount of Muslim girls. They all looked similar & had blue headscarf’s on.
In my dream I was uneasy that the majority of the dancers were Muslim but there weren’t any problems & everyone was getting along fine.
When I woke up I just thought "weird" & forget about it but as you can tell I'm still bothered by it.

That last link in todays News really takes the cake!
I was praying for a close family friend yesterday. Her daughter just told them she's pregnant and she's emotionally unstable, rebellious etc. to begin with. So her mom (our close friend) is near hysterical about it and is talking about all the horrible things that will happen now to her daughter/baby. She at one point even said that she's praying for a miscarriage.
As I was praying, I was very strongly impressed with the words, "Tell her not to invite death in." As I waited on it, I further understood that if death is invited into the situation, Satan won't respect any boundaries and something much worse than just miscarriage would be turned loose. The dad is a cancer survivor and the mom is always worried about it returning. She's trying to protect him from the stress, but in the process isn't looking to the Lord whatsoever.
Miscarriage seems like the quick fix (thankfully abortion isn't on the table), but in the end, it seems like desiring it/death would open wide an avenue for greater destruction to enter.
The alternative, then, is to pray for the abundant life that Jesus offers which overcomes any impossibility. But that requires going way far out on the trust limb, right out to the tiny twigs!

I think the second comment has hit the nail on the head. What will people say if he treats the PA better than Israel? I think this is just another example of BOO's inexperience in the real world outside of Chicago, where being the big fish in the pond doesn't mean the other fish won't gang up on you. Animal dead, no human casualties; 200 kg of dynamite heaped on cart.
A small Syrian-backed terrorist group in Gaza said its activists blew up a donkey cart laden with explosives close to the border with Israel on Tuesday, killing the animal but causing no human casualties.
Abu Ghassan, spokesman for the terrorist group, said more than 200 kilograms of dynamite were heaped on the animal-drawn cart. He added that the explosives were detonated 60 meters from the concrete security barrier that separates the territory from Israel.
The donkey was killed in the blast, but there were no reports of human casualties. Israeli troops routinely patrol the border, and impoverished Gazans often gather rubble in the area.
The Israeli military confirmed the blast, but had no further comment. The IDF said Gaza terrorists also fired two mortar shells into Israel on Tuesday, which fell in the Netiv Ha'asara area without causing damage or casualties.
Earlier this week, masked gunmen from an Islamist group torched a UN-run summer camp for children and teens in Gaza.
The head of UNRWA in Gaza, John Ging, said the assailants tied up the guard, burned tents and vandalized bathrooms at the campgrounds. UN officials said the attackers left behind three bullets and a note threatening to kill Ging and others unless the UN cancels its activities for some 250,000 Gaza children.
Two days before the incident, the previously unknown "The Free of the Homeland" group issued a statement criticizing the camp's organizer, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), for "teaching schoolgirls fitness, dancing and immorality."
And 72 virgins when they get to paradise is not immoral? Good examples of holy and pure intents.

And what did Paul write about in 1 & 2nd Thess? The coming of the Lord! Could this be a hint?
(Also I didn't know this but the Nazi's rounded up all of the Thessalonica Jews during WWII and killed all but 1000.)

Would any one here please pray for a young co-worker of mine. Her husband has become physically abusive after a few months of verbal abuse. He threatened to hurt people at our place of employment and I had to call the police when he showed up. She was a reck, sobbing, locked herself in the housekeeping closet. He is an Iraq vet with PTSD. I shared Jesus with her prior to this and prayed with her prior to it all blowing up and falling apart. It all happened in about an hour. She is so lost and confused. Prays to "God" but she is not sure about Jesus or who God really is. She is so sweet but is so abused and has been lied to terribly by her husband and by the enemy. Please pray for this dear one. Thank you saints.

I'm ready if I can get over walking around bummed out all of the time. (As if that is going to do anyone any good.)
Some people describe getting depressed. I'm not sure if I really get that way - at least not to the extent some do. But I do spend a bit of time feeling like crying for the lost who don't know Christ.
I wonder if I dwell on that too much? I then switch my thoughts to all the Christians I DO know who love the Lord & that cheers me right up-until of course I think about the lost again.
Maybe this is some angle of spiritual warfare aimed at me?
Meanwhile, I just got back from a 3day camp trip w/the girls. We went w/a friend of mine & her daughter.
Interesting event last night.
Yesterday some people had showed up @ the camp site & one of them played the guitar while they all sang.
I was trying to hear what the songs were-they kind of sounded like worship music! My friend thought so too so last night as we had the fire pit going I had the girls invite them over.
It ends up that they were three Marines- 2 males & 1 female. She mentioned that were trying to figure out what to do- went to Boomers (miniature golf/games place) & then suddenly said "Let's go camping!"
As they sat down I prayed that if they didn't know Christ that their hearts would be softened & the Holy Spirit would move.
So after a few songs- which were more rock/secular in nature-(good though!) I looked over at his friend singing & then noticed he was wearing a cross necklace. So I thought- well if he is a Christian then just maybe his friend would know a worship song!
So I asked if he knew of any- which he didn't- but the female Marine said she remembered some from youth @ Church & egged him on to play Hallelujah. Which he did remember a bit of. (The guy wearing the cross mentioned -zip- about Jesus.)
So it turns out that Lorraine & her friend sang a duet Sunday school worship song & then little Melanie sang a solo one as well praising the Lord.
So it ended up that God is faithful & the Holy Spirit did move though the little girls.
Please pray that these 3 Marines would be moved to seek the Lord & that a seed was planted in their hearts last night.

Day 983 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.
They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.
The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.
Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am. Idiots.
There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.
Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.
I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.
The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe… for now...

I had to watch stop watching Glen Beck for awhile because my mind was just reeling with the rapidity of the changes and the pure evil really that has been going on for a long time that he has uncovered. Who knew that the progressive movement had so slowly infiltrated and infected our society and culture until the vast majority seem to be mindless sheep wanting someone else to take care of them and quite frankly the church is not much better. The feel good cafeteria style Christianity instead of Biblical Christianity is just as mind boggling. God finally helped me put it all into perspective and I have to say I now almost feel like an outside observer with regard to the political situation. I know that sounds odd and I am honestly not any less political but I have a better perpsective on it now. I was talking after our apologetics class with some and told them I think we as a country are finished. Theyw ere shocked and asked if I didn't have hope it would improve or turn around. They found my no response disquieting to say the least. I am saddened now but not depressed about it. I would note that I also said that if we had a spiritual revival on par with the Great Awakening happened we were not toast. I just sense whoever that such a thing is not going to happen.

I would note that we wer recently listening to Frucht teach on Angels, demons and Satan and the one thing that was laid on my heart to write about very soon was the fact that Satan has a kingdom plan just as God does. It's easier to see the plan when it is the roaring lion satan but not as easy when it is the angel of light Satan. Frucht noted that there is a passage that teaches about another gospel another Christ and the word for another is used both as another of a different kind and another of the same kind. The real problem is you have things that sound and look Christian but don't measure up to the clear record of scripture. We have become so experiental in our Christianity that we have forgotten to check what we experience and witness against what the Bible teaches. His teachings on Satan are quite good and thought provoking actually

One of the things Frucht mentioned in his teaching on angels is that each believer does indeed have a guardian angel and is charged with protecting that believer from harm. Any "harm" that comes to us is allowed by God for reasons known only to Him. I think however we can make poor choices which put us in harms way and we reap the consequences of that.

Lisa, Jib..on the discussion of feeling sad or even depressed at times.. There are days when I am overwhelmed with feelings of sadness at what is transpiring in our world. I then feel afraid for the people whom I know that are not followers of Jesus. During these times I have a great fear of the Lord, not that He will do something bad to me but just the awesome fear that we have knowing who He is. I also tend to dwell on how, deep down, I really do believe that this is the end of our great nation and our world will be seeing more and more devastation. I am saddened for my sweet children and feel that I have not done an adequate job of preparing them for what is ahead for their lives.
There were two days last week that I could barely even get out of bed. This is highly unusual for me. I am a very cheerful, optomistic person who rarely has ever given in to despair. I also have had to take breaks from watching Beck or the news for these reasons.
I get so sad for the church. I am disheartened at what the false teachers are teaching the sheep. It is overwhelming some days.
I stand on the lord's promises. I cling to His hope. For where would we go? He is the one who gives us life. I have hidden His word in my heart and He brings it to mind when I need it. Praise the Lord!
Just read the headline story on Fox about Israel defending itself at the SC today and wasn't too impressed with the reporting. HOWEVER, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the large majority of the comments after the article were pro-Israel, many vigorously in support of the actions taken yesterday. Perhaps the people who see through the spin and smokey mirrors are starting to join the discussion more? I've been praying for Israel and all those who haven't been taught the truth about God's continuing plan for the apple of His eye. I think our prayers are needed now more than ever.

Although I perceive it as being a very controversial issue, I believe clinical depression in Christians can and does occur. To meet the old DSM IV definition one must exhibit at least 4 of 8 criteria, such as anhedonia (decreased interest in normally fun activities), low mood, insomnia or hypersomnia, increased or decreased appetite, early morning awakening, somatic complaints, and others.
Most of us have ups and downs in our moods throughout the days or weeks. If these emotions are always down and interfere with your ability to perform your duties, then you might consider going to your pastor first and then, if he deems it nonspiritual, a physician.
As far as being spiritual warfare, only you can determine that, but I know from your comments over the years, you know He who reigns in us is stronger than he who is in the world. If you claim power over it and the depression abates, then perhaps it is a spirit of depression.
Cool story regarding the Marines. Perhaps He's using you more than you perceive.
Jenny and I are finishing up packing the house and will have the computer down for the rest of the week. It'll probably be after the 7th before we can check in again.

Is it just me, or is that "sinkhole" in Guatemala City suspiciously round?
The aerial photo looks like it belongs on the "Photoshopping flops" blog I used to love reading. Just doesn't fit. But I can't find anywhere that it's been uncovered as a fake and all the major news sites are using the photos. Still doesn't sit right with me, though.
Jen, I initially thought the same thing, but this morning I viewed video of the hole, and it is round and deep. Florida has a lot of sinkholes, Show me one perfectly symetrical.
Also, I just watched a report about the potential damage that would occur if a hurricane (like Katrina or Rita) crossed over the gulf this season. There's no precedence for it, so they were using previous paths to show how far the oil/dispersants would be pushed. That connected in my mind with Jerry Golden's most recent post. He linked to a radio show that discussed the possibility of mass evacuations of the area and what that could lead to. Not a stretch to see it as one way to divide our land, vis-a-vis Israel.
I'm not feeling anxious about these events themselves, but I do sometimes feel worried that I'm not being as attentive to the Lord as I could be and will miss out on His voice when the time is needed to hear it. But then I remember that my heart is turned toward Him and He doesn't make a habit of losing track of His sheep.

Lori, I'd be more suspicious if it were square or triangular. I've been reading the Guatemalan newspapers, translating them through Google Translate. (Apologies if English is to make sour.)
To summarize, it looks like the residents had been complaining to the city for a few weeks about the "rumblings" and noises coming from the area. Apparently they've also been complaining about the construction traffic going through the area and in particular that intersection. This traffic was going through the intersection 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. According to the locals, the heavy truck traffic was causing "microearthquakes". The owner of the lost building also said he had complained about a broken/leaking (the translation isn't sure) water pipe that undermined the ground in the area. Both the mayor and the city clerk deny having recv'd any such complaints about traffic or water pipes.
There was only one building swallowed, a 3-story house that was being used as a clothing factory. No confirmation yet on any loss of life related to the sinkhole.
If the heavy traffic in fact the cause, then I can totally see the circular nature of the sinkhole. In the US, traffic like that would result in some pretty major potholes. The vibrations from the "microquakes" would spread out in a circular pattern from the point of origin; therefore the affected area would be a circle that's the sum of all the damage that had been caused. Such damage would also damage any street drainage pipes. Even small cracks over time will loosen the soil, and there was a major storm that passed through the area.
So, yes, it's perfectly reasonable for the sinkhole to be circular.

As the sediment dissolves, caves and air pockets develop underneath the land surface. If there is not enough support for the land above the spaces, then the ground collapses and results in a sinkhole. Natural depressions that collect water and man-made structures such as houses and streets with poor drainage are especially vulnerable to sinkholes. Heavy rainfall, like that from Tropical Storm Agatha, only accelerates the process.
Where did all the material that used to be inside the hole go?
Most of it is eroded and washed to the bottom of the hole long before the final collapse into an open hole. When the hole opens, the surface material simply drops to the bottom.
Why the heck is it so round?
Holes often occur when the dissolution of bedrock results in a surface depression that collects water. As the depression gathers more water, the water leaks downward and eats away at more bedrock, catalyzing its further dissolution. Eventually a vertical, circular hole forms straight through the bedrock."
If this is what happened, think of how freaked out the people are now who were driving/walking across it all this time?
After looking online, it's amazing how many deep sinkholes are round!

SINK HOLES TO SHOUT ABOUT
I remember when we were in the Yucatan area of Mexico that sinkholes of this size was not unusual. Some were even much bigger. Guatemala has its' number of sinkholes also. But this was kinda weird so I asked my Geologist hubby and he said it isn't unusual for that area of the world. Now they have a natural landfill project to sink into. @;o) Grany

Not too long ago I heard of a man in California who went into his kitchen at night and fell into a deep hole that had developed right there in his kitchen! Of course, he died. It turned out to be something like a old mine underneath his house. Remember that?
In Orlando a sinkhole developed right by the main Interstate--I-4. For months trucks have been dumping cement into the hole while the traffic is diverted around it. Right now there is a huge mound right next to the freeway, because they want the weight of the earth to tamp it down, and then later they will rebuild the highway over it. That kind of makes me nervous!
Probably 20 years ago, not far from there, a sink hole opened up and swallowed a municipal swimming pool and part of a car dealership or repair shop. Now it's a nice little lake.

my sink hole story is a bit weird. the town i lived in in Ohio one day had a sink hole in the middle of downtown-turns out the rats had been extended the tunnels already underground. the rats were quite large

Here's a question for all you armchair lawyers out there: Ireland has asked Israel for permission to allow The "Rachel Corrie," an Irish owned ship flying under the Irish flag, to enter the blockade zone. I'm assuming that if the ship agrees to allow Israel to inspect the ship and the cargo, and for the Israeli Navy to pilot the vessel, it's possible that permission would be granted.
But what if the ship's crew refuses to allow inspection, etc. Right now it looks like it's just one ship, so after being warned, it could be allowed to approach the blockade zone. (The IDF boarded the Gaza flotilla where it did because with 6 ship it was not possible to peaceably interdict the ships at the 20-mile border.) Once it enters the blockade zone, after being warned, etc., the IDF boards the ship, sails it to Ashdod where the cargo and passengers are offloaded. The Rachel Corrie is then sailed 100 miles out to sea and sunk.
The IDF then announces that this will be the policy from now on: any ship that is used to attempt to break the blockade will be considered spoils of war and will be destroyed. I imagine the outcries will be horrendous. I also imagine the number of vessels being volunteered for these blockade missions will drop dramatically.
In my own mind and from my own (admittedly limited) readings of international law, this would be a perfectly legal thing to do. What do YOU think?

I think the name of the ship alone is cause to consider the mission instigatory. I'm sure others would say that it represents a peace mission, but why not name it after a peace activist not embroiled in such a volatile case?
I am sure they wouldn't allow the inspection and considering that the Irish were also involved in the 1st attempt to run the blockade, why should the IDF trust them.
So, if they did agree to the inspection and search, pilot the ship, unload it and then sink it. Nah! Scuttle the crew and make them swim back to where they came from then the Israelis will deserve the bad press. Stop being so nice and trying to please the world. After all, they are the Apples of God's eye you know.

Two updates: After posting my idea about scuttling ships used in blockade running, I posted it on CAF. That raised a bit of an uproar, as people (who apparently didn't read the entire post or didn't think things through) where shocked that I would propose sinking the ships with people on board. Just so we're clear: all the crew, all the passengers, and all the cargo (including the fuel) would be offloaded, the ships towed out to sea, then they would be scuttled WHILE THEY WERE EMPTY.
Also, re: the spots killing the plants in Memphis: I read all the comments to the article, and apparently they had a factory accident in the area that released a large amount of sulfur compounds into the air. These compounds, when mixed with water, form sulfuric acid. It looks like these plants and animals may be suffering from acid rain.

Please pray for me as I suffered a horrible attack of vertigo last evening after having been fine all day. It came on suddenly and I have never had this before. I felt like I was going to pass out as I lay in bed so my DH took me to hospital so our children would not be afraid. They gave me IV fluids and did some tests. The anit-vertogo drug helped and today I am dizzy and weak but the room is not spinning. I am incredibly hurt by the reaction of my oldest daughter, though. She did not even bother to turn around from the computer to ask how I was when we got home a few hours later! I expressed my distress and she seemed really perplexed as to why I would be hurt by this as she already learned from her grandparents that I was ok and coming home. It is hurtful.
So, I am wondering if it might be a spiritual attack due to my sharing of the gospel with my co-worker the other day. The abused one whose husband I had to call the police on while we were at work. I exposed the evil one as the spirit working in her husband, I told her such.
Anyway. please pray. I started this new job and have only been there 60 days and have called in now three times, once for strep, once for a sick kid and now this. My boss was not happy about the call ins since I am on a 90 day probationary period.

Diana, I'm sorry to hear about this. Please forgive your daughter-she loves you but perhaps her empathy & compassion attributes are not her natural gifts.
Some people are just naturally that way & are always so warm and comforting when things go wrong.
Others (I've tended to fall into this category) just aren't as soft hearted & until God gets in & works on their weak points she may continue to disappoint you in this regard. She probably just thinks you're going to be fine- no big deal.
Praise the Lord God has shown me His heart & has worked in my life in this matter. My D.H. is always walking around w/various ills & still complains I have about as much compassion as an ant.
For him he's probably right. I just think he's in the Lord's hands- he'll be fine but the poor guy wants more TLC...Ok, admittedly I still have along way to go...
When it comes to the lost or people hurting-orphans, etc... then the empathy/compassion comes out for me.
In our individual ways- we are just sinful wrecks but the Lord has promised to fix us up & eventually we will be perfect in every way though Christ in us- the hope of true Glory!
So hang in there. My husband had vertigo so bad he felt like barfing & couldn't work. Something to do w/calcium breaking off in his inner ear. He had to lay on the bed & turn his head from side to side- (I guess it loosens the mineral deposit?) even though he felt so sick doing it.
He's had it more than once too. Hopefully Diana it's something simple like that.
I was super dizzy for 3 days last week, on day two I felt weak and my skin felt "prickly." As an afterthought I remembered I mowed the front and back yard the day before as well as weeding a large flower bed. I may have just overdone it, it's super warm here. Too warm for yard work, perfect weather for beach or pool, both of which are 15 minutes away. :(

A friend gave the kids a bunch of "nature" DVDs that her family wasn't using anymore. I viewed them ahead of time and decided against giving them the ones that specificially encouraged the evolutionary viewpoint. However, 2 of the videos are by Marty Stauffer of "Wild America" fame on PBS. I remember watching his show as a child (we only had 3 channels, PBS being one, so I had lots of time watching nature shows!) In rewatching those 2, I don't find anything about evolution, though he does lean toward the "man encroaching on nature and the ill effects that can bring."
I try to tie any of the nature/science topics into discussions about God's amazing creativity, design, etc. We've already had a brief talk about being careful what we learn on TV because not everyone is using the Bible as their guide and we want to make sure we're understanding our world the way God made it.
What do you think? Would you allow those 2 videos? Is there a good nature series made by a Christian film company? Josh is already a full-fledged science/nature enthusiast and since it's plain that he's wired in those areas, we're encouraging it, but want to do so in a Biblical way.
I got Josh Ken Hamm's dinosaur book and beginners Bible and it was amazing how he already rejected the possibility of a dinosaur being alive at the time of the ark. He kept saying it was a giant lizard and there were no dinosaurs in Noah's day. He's never heard that specifically, but between not seeing dinos pictured with the ark and hearing about them being extinct for millions of years, he has already come to a conclusion that they weren't there.

Jen, Since the those two videos don't talk about evolution I would go ahead and share them with my kids. I find it a wonderful opportunity to blend the bible with the videos and really talk about the wonderful and interesting things that the Lord has made. Find some bible verses to have them memorize that could go along with the video that way they can relate the videos with God's word. Just what I would do! Take care

Jen, I think the key is watching with your children, and videos are best. If something is over the top with evolution, avoid it. If something "pops-in" during an otherwise good show, stop it and ask your children if they know what God's word says regarding that topic. This will give you time to full educate the children on the truth. I have a "josh" type also, he's now 22 . One of the most exhilarating things that we experienced was a 4H trip when the county's "park guide" began a long string of evolution junk and then the students began to ask intelligent questions. (The 4H club project was creation science that year.)
The guide only knew what she was taught. One of the kids' statements had to do with the definition of science truth. Science being facts based on supported hypothesis that has been tested... observable and repeatable. Anything that cannot be observed and repeated should never make it beyond theory, at which case, a belief based upon theory alone then becomes faith, not fact.
The remainder of the tour was left to complete facts... "this plant is called...The woodpecker enjoys eating... Behavioral observances of the ...." She stuck to facts. It was quite an eye opener for the parents. Of course all I wanted to do was yell... Boooyaaaaaaaahhh!

I'm in the same thought process. I watched PBS nature shows for the better part of my childhood and still came away knowing that God created it all according to the witness of Scripture, so I know it's possible to come away with a Biblical worldview even with exposure to the contrary. Parents being present and involved is definitely key.
I'm also committed to raising the kids so that they can be apologists at an early age. And standing on the promises made to parents by God Himself. Train up a child in the way he should go.... We're doing that, so why should I not have confidence in God keeping His word? I think fear can slink in so easily and cause us to doubt and worry about outcomes that may never materialize. I'm understanding more and more that God never intended parenting to be a crapshoot!

There really is truth to that statement but we just need the proper balance.
Its true man can have ill effects on nature when we are not good stewards of God's creation.
As you know this has been used as a "guilt" trigger to draw people into taking this to the extreme - almost into a religious "mother earth" type of idolatry.
Lorraine's Christian Kindergarten teacher within three years of her graduating- has totally changed her tune & started in this year w/mentioning "mother earth". I think this is due to all of the TV 'programming' going on & what they promote in the 'scholastic' book choices that she began to read from.
I almost "FREAKED OUT"- well I felt like it anyway. I ended up coping an apologetic article on this "mother earth" business & gave it to the teacher w/a copy of the "Answers in Genesis" magazine.
She said she really like the magazine so this year for the year end teacher's gifts- everyone is getting a year subscription to "Answers in Genesis".
I know - I'm probably one of the most bizzare mom's around but I've about had it w/all this mamsy pamsy stuff - This means war!

26' tall God of the Dead Statue @ Denver International
On Wednesday, workers erected a 26-foot tall, seven-ton replica of Anubis, the Egyptian god of the dead, adjacent to the main terminal. The statue is here to promote the upcoming King Tut exhibit at the Denver Art Museum.
According to one web site, Anubis is the "jackal-god of mummification," and "assisted in the rites by which a dead man was admitted to the underworld."

What is it w/me & these stories lately?
Tonight I went to a dance recital which my friend's daughter was in.
As we arrived & found our group there was some discrepancy going on between my friend & this guy w/his wife? & child.
My friend had saved some seats for us but this man saw them right before we got to her & said too bad - she's not supposed to save seats & he's going to sit there anyway-so they did.
When I walked up- she was upset by their behavior, explained the situation & said he was rude. I responded w/no big deal & we worked out another spot w/Melanie on my lap & ended up behind them.
Meanwhile as she sat one seat away from him he turned to her & cussed her out.
I saw what was going on & noticed that he had a pentagram tattooed on the top of his right hand w/rings & a skull ring on his other hand. (He was a good looking guy-reminded me of an "Edward" type from Twilight. Dressed all in black & his family all in black.)
I thought to myself- this guy is a pagan if not an outright Satan worshipper & this could mean trouble for my friend. I don't know if he was on drugs or not but the body language was that of arrogant agitation.
So I took it up in prayer & just asked for her protection & to cause him not to start something & for God's will to be done in the situation.
So he sat there through a few dances & then I started praying for his salvation & his family too.
Not long after that he immediately shot up out of his seat- walked past my friend & left.
Then w/my suspicious mind- I thought..."What if he went to the bathroom to put a curse on my friend?" (Which is what these types would do.) So I started praying against that too.
His family stayed there for awhile & then got up & left. Then they came back for a little bit-then left again.
They never returned.
We got a great view of the recital from then on.
I absolutely couldn't believe it. I mean what are the odds of that? From our vantage point (which was most of the theatre) this was the only person/family who left.
So I told my friend (who needs the Lord) that I had prayed & she asked: "Did you pray for him to leave?" I said no,(I really wasn't thinking about that.) but the Lord took care of it anyway.
So there you have it- God is faithful! Now I wonder & will never know what went on in that guy's mind to cause him to leave.

Fascinating story! Interestingly, my devo this morning was titled, "Your enemies flee because of Jesus." It gave me a great insight, too, because I often worry that my prayers or boldness for the Lord may actually attract attacks because the devil wants to shut me up/shut me down. However, the devo confirmed the opposite - and your story might also confirm that. Deut. 28:7: THe Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you in seven ways." The devo also said that as a child of God, you bring a spiritual fragrance wherever you go, one that evil spirits can detect and it causes them to tremble. It's the life of Jesus in you.
1 John 4:4 "He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." So perhaps you were witnessing an example of those Scriptures unfolding in real time. It's a great story to share with us as we invariably will also face similar situations and need to know that God will be faithful to His word of protection.

Jen, That's an awesome devo- I didn't know Deut. 28:7: "..they shall come out against you one way and flee before you in seven ways." I love it!
At the time I had 1 John 4:4 running though the back of my mind & how much more powerful God is than the forces of darkness.
There is nothing we should fear & if we do it's a sign of a lack of faith in who God is & what He will do on our behalf.
But honestly- I was surprised by the outcome. It wasn't like "ho hum I figured that would happen".
It was more like: "Oh my gosh! I can't believe it! Look how the Lord handled it & it was a witness to Him!".
Then when I got home as I was pondering the situation & was thinking-Yeah!-I want those demons to "know" who I am personally like the apostles. As long as I turn to the Lord they will take off when I call upon His name.
So Jen, don't allow those demons to psyche you out - (which you know is their goal.) I pray that a situation will arise & that you will get to see the Lord move on your behalf too!
That potentially bad ordeal last night backfired on the devil..BIG Time! Our God is beyond AWESOME!
The Lord handles things so much better that we do in our flesh.
(My D.H. probably would have contemplated punching him & my friend's dad is a well known retired judge who had his cell phone out ready to call 911 to have the guy arrested if he kept it up.)

I wouldn't have an issue with the dvd's you mentioned however I would note that your son seems to have bought into the party line already to an extent because of his comments about the dinos on the ark. I think it makes perfect sense for all the animals not just the dinos-younger animals take up less space and eat less. A point Hamm makes.

I did you one better- I got all our immediate families books from AIG and subscriptions to AIG magazine for Christmas last year and personally I think it's a GREAT gift for a teacher.
