Galatians 3:13-14

"Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith."

Oh that article by Jim C. is still barfing me! Please don't tell me that this world has become so sick it is using embryos like that. If God isn't very, very angry with the wickedness of man by this time, I don't know what else has to happen to make him so.

I didn't know about tomorrow being ITMAD. But look at those initials and what they spell when listed this way: ITMAD. Now, who is IT?

Turned my Life of the Messiah series on and I am learning bunches. Why couldn't this material have been available eons ago? I wish I could figure a way to get the material out there so everyone could partake of it.

By the way, if you haven't guessed by this time, LM that commented on the previous post is my friend Linda.

It is getting late and I have an appointment with sleeping so I am saying Adeau! So long, until tomorrow.

This Scripture was my focus on Sunday's devotional. The author pointed out that the list of curses that we are redeemed from is found in Deut. 28. Some list! But the best verse is 61...."Also every sickness and every plague, which is not written in the Book of the Law, will the Lord bring upon you until you are destroyed." It's so great because the curse that covers anything not listed has also been broken. Everything that comes against us because of the curse has been broken and paid for. Really amazing grace!

Lisa, I read that interview with astonishment. I could hardly believe how fully "sold out" the rabbi has become! I've watched him talk about the Temple Institute many times and he seemed very lined up with his Jewish beliefs in those videos. You can almost feel the deception he's under. Like in Alladin when the sultan is under Jafar's spell....he just parrots whatever he's impressed to say.
The thought crossed my mind that perhaps he is so desperate to find a way to realize his dream of seeing the Temple rebuilt that he's compromised his beliefs and allowed himself to agree to a mixture, just to see his dreams come to pass. And to read the Muslim man's warnings about Satan's attempts to derail the interfaith project was ironic, to say the least.

Blessings,
Jen

Jim,
The same thing crossed my mind. It's sad, but a sign of our times, that you can't wholly accept a person's word these days.
I often check stuff on Snopes, but have found that a bias can exist so I don't take that info as the final authoritative word either.
My dad bemoans the fact that in business now, you have to go in with a litigation mentality to all business dealings. He said when he started working, you still sealed deals with a handshake and the documents came in the mail later. Today, you bring your lawyer along to the table and speak only when he says it's OK.

jib said...

Jim

I had that same thought.

your dad should try being in the field of medicine. despite the dem talking heads that defensive medicine doesn't add to the overall cost of medicine-they are most emphatically wrong. when you live in a tort ridden state you know they are wrong

Late Night Lisa said...

Jib & Jen- I couldn't read the interview in its entirety either as I was also feeling ill.

As we are witness to these things morphing before our eyes it reminds me of: "God will send them a strong delusion so that they will believe the lie".

It's really hard to believe that the Rabbi would fall for this- ESPECIALLY from Islam- their constant enemy #1. Doesn't it seem that God has His hand in this? Since it sure looks like the final of final end days I suppose we should expect to see world events work toward the fulfillment of Bible prophecies.

We believe these things will happen when when you see it in real time it's still hard to believe! It's actually happening!
Yikes!

We'll be walking around in the midst of deluded people telling us we are the ones deluded!

And Blair- he's really being used- almost as if he's driven- to be instrumental in a unified religious system.

NLT-Translation 2 Thess 2:11
"He will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them."

"So God will cause them to be greatly deceived, and they will believe these lies."

2 Timothy 4:4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

Example in the past:

1 Kings 22:22 "The LORD said to him, 'How?' And he said, 'I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.' Then He said, 'You are to entice him and also prevail. Go and do so.'

Jen said...

jib,
I can't imagine the shadow that you practice under...we got a little taste of it when we met our high-risk perinatologist for the first time. We walked into the meeting with high hopes and came out fearing for my life! The doctor spent the first half of the meeting telling us every statistic about pregnancy loss, maternal death, birth defects and disabilities you could imagine.
Then, he switched off the "things I have to tell you in case something goes wrong and you sue me" presentation and told us he saw no reason why I couldn't carry successfully.
I understand why he counseled us in that way because he had no idea what kind of people we were and what we might do for an easy buck. But it created a very emotional few weeks for us and took us down pathways into discussions about selective reduction and funeral planning for infants, things we never would have talked about until the fear and anxiety seeds had been planted.
In the end, he was a wonderful doctor and was one of my biggest cheerleaders through it all. But to go to work each day and have to face that lurking worry about litigation would be exhausting, nevermind the highstress field he practiced in.

Monsanto, I should have known. Yes, Jim I don't believe anything they have to say. Their track record is pitiful and I would sooner trust a rattle snake than Monsanto. One of the major reasons I do not buy mixes of anything. But then I was shocked to read the label on a gallon of milk that we were planning on buying.

Here are the label listed ingredients: Fat Reduced from 8g to 5g. Grade A reduced Fat Milk, Vit. A Palmitate and Vit. D3.

So I did a search of the two last ingredients and you can see THE RESULTS OF MY SEARCH.

That info is from Dairy House and I am going to find out more info in a second.

I have been listening to Mac's links of Dr. Frucht and hey, it is well worth the time. As soon as I get through searching I am going to link to Lisa's site. I know this is going to be a very busy day linking around!

Great Grany,
Wow on the vitamin D3! Why does sit all have to be so complicated? We can get vitamin D in a much less complicated way, sit in the sun for 10 minutes a few times per week. God had it all planned out!

Great Grany 5 said...

DIANA,
As far as I can find, the two Vitimins that were added is to stabilize the milk/dairy products for longer shelf life. When I was a kid and even during the years of raising my kids, milk had to be used within a very short period of time. If memory serves me right it was no longer than 5 days keeping it almost to the point of ice crystals on the top of the container. But never two weeks! If a store had the milk in longer than 3 days, it was picked up by the dairy and replaced with fresh milk. My aunt and uncle owned a dairy in Prairie City, Iowa for many years during the 40's and sold it in 1951. They furnished fresh pasteurized and then homogenized milk to stores and homes in a wide area there. They ran a double A dairy and when they returned the milk to the dairy to be disposed of, it was fed to the hogs of the neighbors.

I realize all of the health reasons for the rules but to me it is just another example of the government trying to be the answer to every need. Now they have gone the extra mile and are trying to be the replacement for Abba.

Everyone, have a great day.

Do any of you know about "Mike Evans"? Jerusalem Prayer Team

I was reading this letter he sent requesting donations for his campaign to "Save Jerusalem" He sounds somewhat similar to a Joel Rosenburg but does not appear quite as humble.

The reason why I say that is when he prefaces the letter by telling you about the "Words of the Lord" and the "Holy Spirit" telling him to go to this person & that person & the Holy presence of God was felt in this situation...etc...

At first I thought well ok- could be- but then I get to the end where is is "Preparing a vital meeting" to stand in the gap for Israel & has says this will be "the most prominent meeting of evangelical leaders with the nation of Israel in the history of America" which he calls "a prophetic event".

Then he goes on to list some other "prophetic words" he's received from the Lord which came to pass.

Here is the list of his "big league" evangelicals who he is linking up to meet with Benjamin Netanyahu when he returns to meet w/Pres.Obama:

Dr. Franklin Graham, Rev. Rick Warren, Bishop T.D. Jakes, Rev. Joel Olsteen, the pres. of the So. Baptist Convention, the general superintendent of the Assemblies of God, "and many more..."

I don't know quite what to think about this. Rick Warren & Joel Olsteen are definitely on my radar screen not to mention what type of mindset & theology they represent.

Does God really need or want to use these "heavy hitter" evangelicals for anything? Can't the Lord Himself turn someone's heart in the way He wants it to go?

Wouldn't He be more inclined to use the weak & the meek than someone who has to build up his army by convincing everyone how God has spoken though him & used him in the past & how God is currently using him for this "prophetic event"?

Anyway- this sounds fishy to me even though I agree w/the basics of standing w/Jerusalem.

Grany, Shalom! As I understood it, both the Vitamin D and Vitamin A were added to milk because that was considered the easiest way to make sure children got enough of those vitamins for healthy development. (I remember getting this info from my Dad, who treated patients through the time.) I know in the 50's there were concerns because children in the northern states (Minnesota, Wisconsin, et. al.) were experiencing diseases during the winter months brought about by vitamin D deficiency; and children who were formula-fed (at a time where most formula was mixed with cow milk) were having problems getting enough vitamin A. So regulations were passed requiring these two vitamins to be added to cow milk. Since almost every kid in America at the time (don't know if they still do) got a carton of milk for a snack every day, every kid, during the winter, was certain to get a daily dose of these two vitamins. Given the way they process milk (and as a great selling point), these two vitamins were added to all cow milk year 'round.

As for the "use by" dates on milk, I know there have been big advances in how milk is pasteurized, stored, and transported. It's SUPPOSED to be good for one week after the "sell by" date. Nowadays, that means it can be as long as a month from the time the milk reaches the store until the milk reaches your fridge. It's not just the milk that has the pathogens destroyed, but the containers themselves are treated in sterile environments. The shelf-stable milk products have been around for a few years (first sold in camping supply stores) are are the result of Ultra-High Temperature (UHT) pasteurization. This is where the milk is brought to a temp. of around 250 degrees in a few seconds, then quickly cooled so the milk doesn't cook. This kills all the pathogens and all the organisms that would spoil the milk, while leaving the milk "mostly" unchanged. The process does destroy some vitamins and nutrients that have to be re-added to the product, and there are some reports of flavor changes. Not everyone notices the flavor changes, and for people who want/need shelf stable milk, the "shelf stable" is more important than the flavor. Because it is whole milk, one can argue that there are more nutritional advantages using this than dehydrated/re-hydrated milk. I'm going to stay out of that argument.

Hi Jen,

Regarding your question about unrefrigerated milk, I first saw this packaging when I spent a summer in Switzerland back in 1984. They take pride in and have very high standards for their dairy products.

Here's a Wikipedia article on aseptic processing. Interestingly, the article says that "The first aseptic filling plant for milk was presented in Switzerland in 1961."

Jen said...

Wow...that far back! I guess I've been not paying attention for quite some time LOL!
I come from dairy farmer stock, so I've heard all the stories from the other end of milk expiration, including my parents/grandparents drinking milk pretty much directly from the cow (via a cup, of course
:-) and making milk deliveries with my great-uncle who had the dairy. My dad refuses to eat cottage cheese, though. In his mind, it was the stuff you threw out (or fed to the dog/cat) after making butter. I, however, love it.

Anne,
When I saw that yesterday, my first thought was of something I read awhile ago about every manner of evil being displayed in public without regard to the content, in the end days. (wasn't Scripture, but maybe from the Left Behind books?) Porn is already out there and the youtube fights are becoming common place. The Jackass shows disturb me greatly because they make mutilation into a contest. Now the topic of torture/execution (under the guise of an experiment) is upon us. All this also serves as a slow dulling of our senses so that it doesn't seem so horrible after a short while. Case in point:
My mom has been stuck at home with a broken wrist for 6 weeks now. I was visiting her last weekend and a friend has sent her a stack of magazines, etc. to read while she was rehabbing. Mom picked up the Inquirer and flipped through a few pages and then threw it in the trash with disgust. She was truly shocked by the pictures/headlines. I looked at it and didn't have that reaction because I'm used to seeing it all the time on TV, etc. (They don't watch much TV anymore...mostly listen to radio and read books.) So right there, you can see the dulling effect.
On a happier note, I like to imagine how amazing the world is going to be once it's cleaned up from all the garbage that we currently live amongst. Physically, relationally, mentally, spiritually...pure. Can't wait!

Tell Beth to get some Udder Balm from her local drugstore (not a prescription) or if she has a Walmart close by. It comes in a pretty bright green square tin and goes a long way. I looked to see if I still had the new tin of it but couldn't find it. I use it to heal sore hands, feet that get those ugly callouses in the summer (works great) but we used it extensively for my mother during her 6 months of being bed fast and also, my brother from 1990 until 1997. He was wheel chair bound and because the seat of his wheelchair was plastic, he reacted to it with sores. When he came to Oklahoma to be with mother after she was diagnosed with cancer, we put in a different seating material, placed a cushion of lambs wool and treated his hind end with the udder balm. Works wonderfully and now all of the hospice care givers use it on their patients routinely.

Not expensive either! Has a menthol smell but it isn't nasty.

Lori,

Here's a little more to pass on to Beth for what it's worth.

While I think that Bag Balm is fantastic, it's one of two items that we regularly use in our home to heal and protect skin.

The other is lanolin. Interestingly, Bag Balm contains lanolin. This Wikipedia article on Lanolin says: Medical grade lanolin is used as a cream to soothe skin, as it is hypoallergenic and bacteriostatic. In this form it is used by some breastfeeding mothers on sore and cracked nipples. Medical grade lanolin can also be used to treat chapped lips, diaper rash, dry skin, itchy skin, calluses, minor incisions, minor burns and abrasions.

We usually purchase Lanisoh in the baby section at Target.

It's more expensive than Bag Balm but boy, it provides incredibly great skin protection and I have found it to help even better than Bag Balm. Both are excellent in my opinion though. Bag Balm is definitely less expensive than 100% lanolin. We have used it to help heal diaper rash and have also used it on chapped lips.

Jen said...

The interesting thing about lanolin is that is comes from sheep's wool. It's produced by sheep's skin and is extracted from the wool after shearing. So ironic!

She has had a ruptured brain aneurysm and is in critical condition in the hospital. Dr's have placed a monitor in her brain due to excess fluid also. She is only semi responsive. Her husband's name is John. They have been married for many years and they are late 50's or thereabouts. She has a grandson to whom she is devoted and has semi raised him. She has been a tremendous godly influence in this young man's life as has her husband. pray for strength and healing

the judgment of America continues with the passage of the "health care reform bill". I just got into a debate with a Christian who said that God is a God of love and would never judge us as a Country because Christ died for our sins. Where does one even begin with that nonsense. Suffice it to say when I tried all she could say was that since we were sisters in Christ she didn't want to debate the issue. Her attitude is one of the reasons we are in the mess we are in. We've rolled over too long to the secularization of our culture to the point where we as Christians can't even see the forest for the trees

Do you have the joy of God's presence?

On that day the announcement to Jerusalem will be, "Cheer up, Zion! Don't be afraid! For the Lord your God has arrived to live among you. He is a mighty savior. He will rejoice over you with great gladness. With his love, he will calm all our fears. He will exult over you by singing a happy song." Zephaniah 3:16-17 NLT

I know the Lord is always with me, I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. No wonder my heart is filled with joy, and my mouth shouts his praises!
Psalm 16:8-9 NLT

Happy are those who obey his decrees and search for him with all their hearts.
Psalm 119:2 NLT

Real joy

Is joy, or happiness, a passing emotion or a permanent state? The Bible says it can be both. There is happiness that reacts to happenings (which is temporary and volatile), and there is happiness that overrules happenings (which is strong and lasting). Happiness based on happenings is part of life, but if that is all we can count on we have to keep feeding ourselves with events to keep us upbeat. Those who know the joy that comes from God don't need happenings to keep them happy. They learn how to develop inner joy because they know, no matter what happens, God offers hope and promise.

Bob and I decided last night that we aren't going to watch any TV news or listen to any radio for about a week, in order to stay out of the whirlwind of emotions that will be prevelant during that time. Jubilation will rub us the wrong way and make us spiteful but blame and doom/gloom will also sour our spirits as well. We spent some time last night just thanking God for all His goodness and favor and also spent time praying for the waywardness of our nation (in so many areas) to be attended to by His merciful hands.
It's a great time for us to dig into the Word and refresh our minds about who we are in Christ and how we can be used in the dark. Alesia's verses are a great reminder of that!
We just feel so priveledged to be alive at this time, to see things happening that have been anticipated for so long and also so incredibly grateful that we are already in Christ. What fear and anxiety would be running through our hearts if we didn't know about God's love and promises for us?
It's a rainy day here, but the day actually seems pretty bright when I remember these things.

Blessings,
Jen

Alesia,
Great inspiration and so true. Our hope is in the Lord and none other.

We all know what is ahead, or at least we do have an inkling of what is in store. However, it is very easy to focus in on the terrible things and lose sight of the glory. For instance, God's word tells us that His Church will be without spot or blemish by way of His cleansing and correcting power. That God will pour out of His self an anointing that will accomplish all that we could ever hope for and more besides. That we will not go out of this world in defeat (The gates of Hell shall not prevail against the church) and that we will walk in the fullness of God's presence beyond anything ever seen before. The ancients longed for our day and we are also told that God's Angels will assist in all of this.

I don't mean angel dust and feathers either. I also don't mean we will be focused on angels only that we will be armed and manned by God's already given authority over evil. So, the more man tries to expel God from the scene the more presence He will have.

The devil's lease on this world is coming to screeching end very, very soon. The cup of trembling is shaking like crazy and there is a strong delusion over the world's leaders. The pinons aren't doing so well
either.

The Kingdom of God is @ Hand! Let's continue to press on yielded to the Spirit to call out those sheep.

The sheep hear His voice and they FOLLOW Him.

The little girl we take to Church has begun a nightly Bible study w/her father. So every night they sit down @ the kitchen table and read one chapter from the New & Old Testament.

His wife (my friend) is in complete shock. She says that she doesn't say anything- just listens to their conversations. I had previously told her that her husband is not hopeless & that the Lord can do anything. Even the most seemingly impossible people are not more than God can handle.

But why is this particular person listening now? Well- it's because he's a traditional patriot type & can see our country going down the tubes. He also remembers the "prophecies" (w/some of my urging) of the Bible & is beginning to take notice of what's going on.

People not in Christ are coming to their wits end w/what is happening to our country & want hope. (And not the type Obama has in mind.)

So hang in there - God's ways are not our ways & He's bringing in the harvest.

I don't know how many of you have been keeping up on the latest child abuse scandals in the Catholic Church. This last week the Pope released a letter to the victims of clergy abuse in Ireland. In addition, a scandal has broken that occurred while then-Cardinal Ratzinger was bishop in his former diocese in Germany. Several media outlets have tried to link the abuse in a children's choir with the Pope's brother, a priest who was the director of that choir. For the record, the abuse occurred BEFORE the Pope's brother became the director (it was the previous director that was accused). Other accused priests that came to Ratzinger's attention were dealt with according to advice from the psychiatrists (i.e., some were returned to "active duty" after being cleared by the psychiatrists to do so.)

With THAT in mind, I found this article published in The Independent (an Irish newspaper) very interesting, particularly this paragraph that appears about a quarter of the way down:

The debate about whether paedophilia should continue to be regarded as a psychiatric disorder has recently resurfaced now that the American Psychiatric Association is examining the list of conditions it will classify as psychiatric disorders into the future.

The article points out several things, such as if the APA removes pedophilia from its list of psychiatric disorder, then it becomes "an ingrained behavioral preference", which could/would lead to it no longer being illegal. It also points out the huge difference in how pedophilia was treated in the psychiatric textbooks of the '70s compared to the '80s. The earlier textbooks had nothing on the effects of childhood sexual abuse, while the later textbooks were filled with information.

Keep in mind this is not just a Catholic issue. The abuse scandals that affected (and continue to affect) Protestant ministries don't get the headlines, mostly because the smaller sizes of the churches prohibit the awarding of multi-million dollar settlements. You can see this in the growing cost of malpractice insurance that churches must carry to protect them against any claims. At the same time, the Orthodox Union is trying desperately to put a lid on a growing scandal where major rabbis are accused of abusing and covering up abuse of children at dozens of yeshivas across America, even to the point where some are accused of helping an accused pedophile escape to Israel rather than serve prison time.

Part of me hopes no, but the greater part of me is convinced that the APA will continue along the "politically correct" wave and remove pedophilia from its list of disorders. Won't that be fun.

I did read that info and even more is to come. In my heart, I believe all of this is just another nail in gaining the world order with a universal religion that will mean absolutely nothing in God's kingdom. But the advance of deviate behavior isn't just relegated to the churches. The horrible thing that involves the church is the relationship it is supposed to have with Abba.

If this direction of deleting it from Psychiatric disorders is carried through, it will become a matter questioning the legalities of law enforcement intervening. Do homosexuals get arrested for their behavior or for that matter, what about exotic dancers who help to start the wild fantasies churning? No, it will all become a matter of life styles and then the laws of serial killers will start to be questioned. After all, seriel killers are said to be victims of uncontrollable life styles.

Can you all see where this is going?

On a completely different note, my email inbox today was filled to capacity with Citizen action groups getting their engines ready for the battle to begin for the November elections. To the place that one group is worried the tea party will cause a default vote to weaken the chances of change that WE CAN BELIEVE IN!

As for me and my household, we are going to fight the good fight of faith, put on the sandals of peace, helmet of salvation, gird ourselves and bind up all the loose ends and move to Australia! Or New Zealand! Or Porto Rico, or the Virgin Islands, or how about Wasilla, Alaska.

Anyway, the battle lines are already being drawn and only the Lord can help us now. In the meantime, our Family Practice physician has announced he is not taking any Medicare patients from this date on. That's OK with me because quite truthfully, I don't intend to live forever down here wondering what idiotic mess BOO is going to start next.

Can anyone help me reconcile these two passages?

John 20:17 (speaking to Mary)
17Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' "

John 20:26-29
26A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" 27Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."

28Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"

29Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

Looking up the two passages on BlueLetterBible.org I see that different verbs are used in each passage in reference to the touching action. But the different verbs didn't shed any light on the topic for me.

How come Mary wasn't permitted to touch our risen Lord but Thomas was encouraged to?

jib said...

Jim G

just listened to a teaching on this from Frucht-I was seeking inspiration for my April deacon's contribution for our church newsletter. Frucht says that there are several theories about this but unfortunately for you I only remember his :-)

He feels that the reason is that Christ actually ascended into heaven and came back. Per Frucht, when Satan rebelled and fell, the heavenly sanctuary of which the Temple was a copy, needed to be cleansed by better blood. The blood of animals was insufficient to cleanse the heavenly sanctuary. Since Christ is the High Priest, Frucht feels that he had to ascend into heaven and cleanse the heavenly sanctuary as the high priest. Since the High priest could not be touched after his ritual purification prior to presenting the blood in the Holy of Holies Christ also could not be touched. He then came back down to earth after cleansing the heavenly sanctuary and then could be touched.

Actually the other has to do with the 2 verbs. The verb used with Mary means she was clinging to Him in such a fashion and with the intent of never letting him leave again. He was telling her not to cling and that he would have to leave again. The touching for Thomas was of a different kind of touching and was with the intent of proving that Christ was flesh and blood not to keep Christ from leaving.

take your pick. there was one more but I don't remember it

Anne said...

Hmmm...the second explanation makes sense to me.

From Strong's, KJV,

The word used in v 17 is touch (Touch Me not) transliterated haptomai

1) to fasten one's self to, adhere to, cling to

1a) to touch
1b) of carnal intercourse with a women or cohabitation
1c) of levitical practice of having no fellowship with heathen practices. Things not to be touched appear to be both women and certain kinds of food, so celibacy and abstinence of certain kinds of food and drink are recommended.
1d) to touch, assail anyone

The word used in v 27 is thrust (and thrust it into My side), transliterated ballo

1) to throw or let go of a thing without caring where it falls

1a) to scatter, to throw, cast into
1b) to give over to one's care uncertain about the result
1c) of fluids

1c1) to pour, pour into of rivers
1c2) to pour out

2) to put into, insert

Could it be that Mary couldn't touch Him because she was a woman as well as the attempt to cling?

Never occurred to me until recently, that the following two passages seem to pose an interesting question about the Holy Spirit.

John 20
21Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." 22And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."

Acts 1
1In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."

When Jesus breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit" didn't the disciples receive the Holy Spirit then? How did that impartation of the Holy Spirit differ from the gift and baptism spoken of by Jesus in Acts 1?

Mind you, I have an Assemblies of God background and currently attend a Foursquare Church (both denominations are considered Pentecostal) so I know that Pentecostals would say that these two events illustrate the difference between simply being saved and being baptised in the Holy Spirit. I'm not sure I'm fully convinced of or embrace that explanation though. I'd be curious if others here have any insight on how the two passages relate and what we can learn from them.

Incidentally, I've been reading Francis Chan's book Forgotten God which is a great encouragement for us to return to the Holy Spirit and live by Him. I would enthusiastically recommend the book.

Check out the picture of the calculator linked at the end.

PROBLEM
Finding a calculator with enough digits to perform simple math on the spending and stimulus packages coming from the Obama administration.
Have you found yourself trying to visually quantify the amount of money being proposed and spent in Washington? The Obama administration takes no shame in using the term trillions where most Americans were shocked when the term billions were used in recent years.

Look around your home or office for a calculator with enough digits for a trillion dollars. You'll find standard calculators from school or office supply stores with 8, 10, or 12 digits. A trillion dollars is $1,000,000,000,000 (12 zeros) and requires a 13 digit calculator.

SOLUTION
The Obama Spendulus Calculator has 14 digits; enough digits for $99,999,999,999,999. That's one dollar short of 100 trillion dollars.
The Obama Spendulus Calculator is a full featured calculator with large keys and an easy to read display. With 14 digits, it can handle the spending and stimulus packages coming from Washington.

Frucht does address this also in one of the files I have just been listening to. The main point of the teaching is that this breathing of the Holy Spirit onto the disciples came under the OT function of the Holy Spirit and not his NT function. in other words, similar to what the prophets would have experienced. Frucht makes the point also that Christ does this because He has a limited time in which to teach them concerning himself as revealed in the OT and that this breathing of the Spirit in this context was to facilitate their learning. By inference it has nothing to do with salvation-after all if they weren't saved to begin with (faith in Christ and his accomplished work) there would be little point in giving them understanding which would essentially be useless. I think it does help explain to a certain degree why people marveled in Acts about how such unlearned people could preach with such authority. Each one of us is aware that when we came to Christ we had much to learn and needed to grow. Paul talks about babes in Christ and getting meat and not milk as we grow. So essentially baptism of the Holy Spirit as occurred at Pentecost did not necessarily confer immediate spiritual maturity and knowledge or we would all be spiritually mature at the time we accept Christ instead of having to grow in Christ.

Jim G;

This was posted at "Grace thru Faith" (Jack Kelley) just last week. Maybe it can help shed light on the subject. It does seem to explain the differences in how we experience the Holy Spirit.

"Receiving The Holy Spirit"
Q. We are having a bit of disagreement in our Bible Study. In John 20:22, Jesus blew unto his disciples with the Holy Spirit. In Acts 2:4 his disciples received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Is this the same thing, though it happens in different times and places?

A. The Holy Spirit came to dwell within the disciples on the night of the Lord’s resurrection, as He has done with every believer since (Ephesians 1:13-14). At Pentecost the Holy Spirit came upon them in power. The difference is that the first instance demonstrates the Holy Spirit being sealed within us, and the second one shows Him working miraculously through us. All believers can experience both.

Hope this helps.

Dear Family and Friends,
Many of you have heard me mention my friend, Keith Wheeler, who literally carries the cross around the world. Just to know him is a humbling experience. He has been beaten, stoned, persecuted, and left for dead in his mission for Jesus, but along the way he has witnessed more miracles than most of us will ever even read about. Below is a "milestone" e-mail that he just sent out that I thought would be of interest. To see hundreds of pictures of his journeys you can click on
www.kw.org. In His light, Bob (Uncle Bob Morley)

Dear family and friends!

Greetings in the beautiful and precious name of Jesus! I pray that you are well and blessed! Wow! What a privilege to follow Jesus and serve Him together with you! Thank you so much for reading these email updates
and for going together with us to the nations! God bless you! Thanks so much for loving, praying and financially sending us to the world with the cross and the wonderful message of God's love for all people!

With God's help, this Good Friday will complete 25 years of carrying the cross around the world! Wow! Can you believe it?!! That also means that I'm getting older! By the mercy and grace of God, the cross has now been carried nearly 20,000 miles through 187 countries and on every continent! It hasn't been for sport, adventure, or even the thrill of travel. The only explanation for where God has allowed us to openly carry the cross and share Jesus is that He wanted it done! Only God could
have accomplished this! He has truly protected me and preserved my life, health and even provided for this pilgrimage!

For this "hillbilly", the world has become one large family! How can I say thanks for such love from God?!! No longer has the world become a place of borders, only brothers and sisters. As I walk and become so thirsty I couldn't spit a car will stop with food and drink. So many times the night is coming and I didn't know where I will sleep, only to
have a family invite me into their home to be part of their family. I
carry with me a part of these precious, precious people! I can close my eyes and see the faces of people, people, people! Oh, what a privilege!

When I began, I only thought that I was to walk through Tulsa on that
Good Friday so many years ago! God willing, I will be back in Tulsa and will carry the cross in Tulsa along the same route as I did back in 1985.

campsmore said...

I feel so humbled and blessed that God has given me this honor! I don't know why He chose me, but what a privilege! I think the greatest part of this journey has been the time with Jesus! He has walked with me along the roads between the villages! He has been my companion in the cold nights when I couldn't sleep. He has not left my side when walking on
those rainy days! He has been my Protector when facing the many dangers along the way! I loved Him when I began, but oh, how I have fallen in love with Him!!! His love and His presence have been so very, very real,
constant, and unchanging! And His voice has become so clear!

I thought by now I would be with Him and have seen His glorious face! I don't know why He has spared me. Yet, during this time I have gotten to know Him face to face. I pray that I will know His face so well that when I do bow before Him there will be no surprises! I want to know Him!
I want to know what He likes! I want to know what makes Him happy and laugh! I want to know what makes Him sad and cry! I know that one day He will wipe away every tear from my eyes, but I want to be the one who will wipe away His tears today! I say with all my heart, along with Paul,"For me to live is Christ; to die is gain". While He gives me
breath on this earth may I come to know Him so well that there is such an overflow of His love and His presence that many, many will be blessed!

For now, by the grace of God, I am carrying the cross in Siberia! I had a short time to carry the cross in Finland. Brrr!!! It has been glorious and cold!! Yesterday, an old man with a traditional fur hat who couldn't speak English came up to the cross and held it ... and just wept! Many, many have prayed! Oh, how awesome!

Please continue to keep us in prayer! May we continue to have the grace of God to lift up Jesus in a way that is simple and clear and so that many will see Him and not us! May He continue to increase, and may we truly decrease! May we have ears to hear what He is saying; may our
heart stay soft and broken before Him; and may we have the grace and
strength and courage to obey all that He speaks; and the endurance to go ALL the way!

We love you and are so thankful for you! Thanks for joining us on this pilgrimage!

God bless you!!

yes. The holy Spirit seals us at the time of our salvation and comes to indwell us at that time. I don't think there is a separate baptism and honestly I think Frucht's explanation is better than Jack Kelly's because it makes more sense. It wasn't possible for the Spirit to indwell the apostles and other disciples since Christ was still on the earth and Christ said that the Spirit couldn't come until he left. Also, if the Spirit sealed the believers at the time of Christ's resurrection why did it take several appearances of Christ to several people over about a weeks period of time to get them to do what Christ had commanded them to do before He died-namely to meet up with Him in Galilee?

campsmore said...

Jib, question: If there is so separate baptism, then why do you think the disciples were instructed to stay in Jerusalem until they were filled?

As for your comment that the Holy Spirit couldn't come down until Jesus was gone, is incorrect. The Holy Spirit descended from a cloud during His water baptism.

campsmore said...

I think there is a difference between being indwelt with the Holy Spirit and being overflowing with the Holy Spirit.

hyde said...

John 16:7 suggests to me that the Holy Spirit couldn't come on a permanent basis while the Lord remained on the earth.

We know that the Holy Spirit worked with OT saints and that He descended as a dove in Matt 3:16, so John 16:7 has to refer to something different.

Perhaps the breathing of the Spirit by the Lord on the disciples was a temporary strengthening (which they seemed to need) until Pentecost. (?)

My Life is but a weaving
between my Lord and me;
I cannot choose the colors
He worketh steadily.

Oft times He weaveth sorrow
And I, in foolish pride,
Forget He sees the upper,
And I the under side.

Not til the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly,
Shall God unroll the canvas
And explain the reason why.

The dark threads are as needful
In the Weaver's skillful hand,
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned.

He knows, He loves, He cares,
Nothing this truth can dim.
He gives His very best to those
Who leave the choice with Him.

Frucht makes a very good point about the Lord's statement that the Spirit could not come until Jesus left. I would tend to doubt Jack's explanation because of the disciple's actions until the day of Pentecost. They were certainly not "empowered" until then. Maybe there is a difference between being "sealed" and being "empowered". The sealing comes from our action to accept salvation and the empowering is by the Spirit's action for some work He intends for us.

Good discussion!

GT- What do you think about Drew's explanation?

What I understood from it is that the Holy Spirit was "along side/aside" the disciples verses "inside" @ Pentecost.

(*That's if I'm understanding this correctly.)

At first, I looked into a mirror but it was cloudy and I didn't understand what it was. Then on November 5, 1990, the Holy Spirit was made manifestly strong, the fire came and the object I was looking at in the mirror became very clear. Looking face to face, I was able to see clearly.

The ANOINTING is the difference between the two time periods. Without the infilling of the Holy Spirit the Anointing is weak. Remember, Jesus said that when the Holy Spirit comes he will Baptize you with power and fire! The power might be all that most are looking for but it will generate pride if perverted. The fire comes to enable (anointing) and keep the flesh from puffing up.

When we try to understand with our minds/intellect God's plans, purposes and pursuits, we are in a humanistic approach to God. He said "my ways are not your ways, and my thoughts are not your thoughts." One very important reason for the Holy Spirit. Look at the purposes that Jesus said the Holy Spirit would come.

You all know already where I stand and the last time I approached the subject, flame throwing began. Let me just say this, don't be deceived by the doctrine of men.

DIANA, congratulations and all of the joy of the first day to you.

Vicki, I really liked the poem and I am going to print it out for my friends in Missouri.

Lisa;
Here are the sections from your post.

"The idea of the Spirit being "with you" is the idea that He comes along side to prompt you as He did with the disciples as He drew them to Christ. But, the phrase "in you" designates a taking up of a permanent relational residence. This is distinguished from the word eppi in the Greek, which means to come upon or to overwhelm.
And so at conversion the Spirit of God permanently takes up residence in our lives, but there is a time at which He comes upon us to empower us for service, to be bold for His honor and glory.
No longer is the Spirit simply abiding with them and prompting them but now He has a hold on them. They have received the Holy Spirit.
It isn't until after the promise is given to them; the promise of the power of the Holy Spirit, that we see the disciples going out in service to Christ with boldness."

It seems that he is saying that before they were believers the Spirit of God was alongside prompting them. When they began to believe then Jesus imparted the Spirit to them and the Spirit was inside them (sealed). It was not until Pentecost that they were "empowered".

on a permanent basis and for his new role the Holy Spirit could not come down while Christ was on the earth. Christ himself said that if he did not go away then the Comforter could not come.

I don't think that the disciples had the power of the Spirit prior to staying in Jerusalem although I do think they did have the influence of the Spirit much in the same way that the OT prophets did. nor do I think they were indwellt prior to that time either.

I think this is one of those things which more or less people are going to have to agree to disagree on.

That makes sense. What is the "fire" part? Firery trials that keep the flesh in check?

It's really a blessing to have a partial memory. How easy it is to forgive when you don't remember the past!

So my memory of the past flame throwing is extremely vague @ best.

Can you tell me more about the "fire" ?

Lisa, Shalom! The article didn't bug me too much; it's nothing that I haven't heard of before. The question isn't "Were Vatican resources used to smuggle Nazis out of post-war Europe?"; the question is "Did Pope Pius XII know and approve of these actions?" The answer to that is "maybe."

There were two ways out using the "rat line". The first was to use Benedictine monasteries to travel to the south of Italy, where ships would smuggle them out to South America using forged passports. The Benedictines have given shelter to travelers since the foundation of the order over a thousand years ago. Even today, if you are walking/hiking and you ask a Benedictine for shelter, they will give it to you, with no questions asked. You can imagine how this hospitality was used (and abused) immediately after WW2.

The second way out was with Vatican assistance, using documents provided by the Vatican. Here's where things become murkier. The Vatican is like any multinational, in that the people of different nationalities, while working for the organization, are still the products of and have loyalty to the nation of their birth. IOW, there were Nazi sympathizers inside the Vatican, simply because there were Germans, Austrians, and Italians working inside the Vatican.

In addition, since the formation of the USSR, the Vatican had worked in opposition to it. During the '30s priests had to be smuggled inside the country to replace the priests that were imprisoned and/or executed by the Communists. During the Spanish Revolution, the Republicans were fighting with the aid and support of the USSR against the Fascists, lead by Franco and getting their support from the Nazis -- the first "war by proxy." Whenever the Republicans (i.e., the Communists) came through an area, the next day people would walk to church stepping over the bodies of the priests, nuns, and religious workers who had been murdered in the streets as an example.

So it may not be too surprising that, while both sides were bad (and make no mistake about it, Pius XII knew of and opposed the evil of Nazism -- just read the encyclical "Mit brennender Sorge" (With burning sorrow) which was smuggled into Germany and Austria and read in all churches at the same hour on Palm Sunday 1937), if forced to choose between the two evils the Church would have sided with the Germans against Russia. After the War, it was policy that the German officers that had served on the Eastern Front would be turned over to the Russians. Knowing of what lay in store for these officers, it is very possible that the use of Vatican resources to smuggle them out was approved by Pius XII. However, I do not believe that the use of these resources to smuggle out German and Nazi officers who had served in the West (and who would have been turned over to American, British, and French officials) was known of or approved by Pius XII. It just doesn't fit with what we know of his character.

(As a point of accuracy, "Mit brennender Sorge" was issued by Pius XI; however, one of the main authors was the cardinal who became Pius XII in 1939. So Pius XII knew of and supported efforts to reign in Nazism.)

And just for clarification, the "rat line" wasn't the only way out. The Nazis had used their resources to set up their own "rat lines" well before the end of the war. Just do research on the Nazi "ODESSA", which is the acronym in German for the organization.

Donna, Shalom! You wrote:

This also came up in when I posted the links on the Catholic Answers Forum. If you look at the date of the broadcast, March 8, that was when there was the push to re-institute sacrificing a passover lamb on Temple Mount. Whether the birth or the announcement gave rise to this push for the sacrifice or not, the timing is such that I think there wasn't a big deal made of it, publicly or officially. Can you imagine what would have happened if both of these events -- the sacrifice and the birth of the red heifer -- would have hit the public at the same time? How many newspapers would have interpreted it and written it up as Israel planning to rebuild the Third Temple today, beginning with the Passover sacrifice? Imagine what the reaction would have been in the Arab world to even the RUMOR of that happening? And given the way BOO has been acting, do you seriously think he might send in American troops to calm things down?

So the word is out; since it's not posted on the website or in any kind of press release there's still plausible deniability, and the faithful have been given hope.

Lisa,
I promised to discuss the fire that was mentioned in Matthew 3:11. Here is what I have experienced along with a Christian resource on the subject of the Fire.

John the Baptist spoke this message just before Jesus appeared for water baptism “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whole sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Ghost and fire.” Then in Luke 3:16 basically the same testimony. Some people like to think that the fire is something that they are going to be equipped with as a means of serving God. But to me it was the refining fire that burned out all of the chaff (wrong doctrine), old habits or ways of thinking that do not reflect or serve the Kingdom of God in righteousnes, and above all, sinful behavior of all kinds. Before anyone says anything let me add this, I am still a work in progress just like everyone else but daily, the fire burns out the stubble, hay and wood so that my testimony can be true at all times.

But that fire! When I was baptized on October 31, 1990 and spoke in a heavenly language, I didn't have any idea of a Fire Baptism but I did speak in an unknown tongue. On November 5, 1990 two friends from Church and I went to Oklahoma City to attend a Seminar on the Book of Revelation. One of the friends had not received the baptism and wanted it so very much and asked me to go with her as she prayed. That is when the Fire came. As I was praying for her all of a sudden all I could utter was “Abba, Abba, Abba, over and over again. I had no idea what it meant but the room got very warm and I have no idea how long we were there but I didn't walk very well after that and had a terrible time when we arrived back at our lodging for the night. One of my friends called me a sop and I guess that is what I must have looked like.

What did the fire do? Its purpose is to burn off all of the chaff and put me on a path of what you would call “being on fire for the Lord”. There was an unquenchable desire in me to just love Abba, seek Him out and keep completely away from anything that would pollute my relationship with Him. All of a sudden, all of God's promises were filling my life with hope, JOY unspeakable, and a peace that passes all understanding. Nothing scared me anymore and I was far from timid when it came to sharing God's love toward all mankind. When I think back to those days, I realize some of the worst episodes in my life were happening on a daily basis with my husband, my Mother's health, my brother's health, and a whole lot of other stuff. But my only desire was for God's provisions and presence.

But let me say it like my Greek New Testament Interlinear bible does: II indeed baptize you in/with water unto repentance; the One but after me coming stronger than me is, whole not I am worthy sandals to carry, He you will baptize in/with Spirit Holy, whose winnowing shovel is in hand-His, and He will thoroughly clean out threshing floor His, and He will gather – wheat~His into the/His barn, the ~ BUT CHAFF HE WILL BURN UP WITH FIRE ~UNQUENCHABLE.

Here is a statement on this passage from my Greek Concise Bible Commentary published by AMG Publishers.

“Although John baptized people to show they had repented and been forgiven their past sins, his baptism gave them no power to live a pure life. It was merely a preparation for One who was far greater than John. Jesus Christ would give the Holy Spirit, which, Like Fire, would burn up the useless chaff of the heart, leaving the pure wheat to feed and strengthen the life of the believer. (Mt. 3:1l-12; Luke 3:15-17; John 1:24-28).

Sorry this is so long,

Got my dates wrong on the time of the Fire. It wasn't November 5, it was several days before Halloween of 1990. November 5th was the date that my Mother and I flew to Seattle, Washington to be with my brother who was in critical condition after having suffered coronary and pulmonary shut down. Now that isn't the medical term for it but it explains what happened to him. The specialist didn't give him any chance of recovery and we were ordered to make final arrangements for his body. Instead, we took him back to the Adult Care Facility in Olala, Washington in our rented vehicle. God did wonderful work and proved that He is still in the Miracle business.

Hallelujah!

I've been praying about this for several days now, and I feel that I should share this information. The LORD has impressed upon me that someone here truly desires understanding in this area.

I am going to put a caveat though, if you are anti-OSAS or believe that the Baptism by or with the Holy Spirit equals speaking in tongues, you will not appreciate this teaching by Dr. Fruchtenbaum.
But, if you can read information that you do not necessarily agree with without anger springing up, there is still a lot that you might be able to harvest from this study.

In no way do I want to start a back and forth in those areas or cause flare-ups within your fellowship.

But it appears to me that some of you do not have a solid understanding of the ministries of the Holy Spirit to be able to explain to others. I immediately thought of this Messianic Bible Study from Dr. Fruchtenbaum on the Ministries of the Holy Spirit.

You can go to Ariel Ministries webpage and click on Discipleship, which will take you to the "Come and See" page.

Scroll down the page to MBS066 "The Ministries of the Holy Spirit," and you can click on MBS066 and print out a PDF file or click on L066 and listen to the tape file. It has 15 segments, each segment being less than 30 minutes. There is also a benefit of quizzes that you can take when you finish your study. I flunked the first time I did the quiz. (Read the questions very carefully.)

The PDF file is 42 pages on my printer.

I listened to the tape messages twice before I printed out the PDF file. I already believed most of what was taught, but he had layers of depth that I had never experienced before and I wanted to really chew on it.

I am very glad that I did.

This addy will take you straight to the "Come and See" page.

Thanks for that post, Anonymous. I've been going through the "Come and See" lessons very slowly. The Covenants PDF printout alone was 42 pages but it has been well worth it and with plenty of aha moments. There’s a lot of information there. The important thing to do is to prayerfully read all the Scriptures that come with the lessons. This has taken me a loooong time with plenty of note writing. I'm determined to complete them all. I’m looking forward to doing the Holy Spirit and Salvation/Eternal Security lessons but don’t want to get ahead of myself.
